The London Olympics could be epic

Was watching the news and checking out all the heavy artillery they have placed around town. How does that strike you residents?

Rochard 05-03-2012 05:46 PM

After 9/11.... They need to be prepared.

They haven't forgotten what happened in Munich.

livexxx 05-03-2012 06:29 PM

so funny, reporters asked , what scenario do you see these being used in
answer, they are part of a multi-layered defence

question, would you be required to shoot down a hi-jacked civilian or cargo jet over populated areas?
answer, the response is part of a mult layered defence along with the fast jet cover

question, do the jets have a shoot to kill policy?
answer , as part of the multi-layered defence we are part of a defence system

question, when looters or rioters set fire to the block of the flats these are sitting on top of, what would you do?
answer, none

What do you think would happen if a 747 was shot down over London? Would it be okay because the stadium was not hit?

It is pretty packed, not a lot of empty space for falling debris, bodies, etc

baryl 05-03-2012 06:49 PM

Probably would do less damage just letting the damn plane hit where it's going than shooting it down.

It would be pretty idiotic though for terrorists to do exactly what they are expecting.

moeloubani 05-03-2012 06:52 PM

better idea to just address the underlying reason for munich

I would have to agree. It is not like they are setting up on the hills or fields outside of town.

Domain Diva 05-03-2012 08:33 PM

I would guess that with the stadium holding 55-80,000 people or whatever the number is , that the order of the day will be simply shoot down anything heading towards it.

As for extra security in general, heathrow airport and other major parts of London have had machine gun/heavy armed cops for years so i dont think the locals will notice much of a difference in the overall increased protection .

Doesn't the White House have a ring of missile emplacements? Wouldn't the same thing happen if a plane was shot down there?

Dirty Dane 05-04-2012 10:33 AM

Epic insanity.

NaughtyRob 05-04-2012 10:38 AM

Summer Olympics sucks. I prefer Winter.

I am not aware of missile emplacements around the White House; I certainly never saw them, unlike the artillery on the streets of London today. That being said, London is much more densely populated than Washington, DC., by about 7.5 million people.

Sid70 05-04-2012 10:41 AM

Eastern Midlands is where i like it in England.

Saw some of the sites from the taxi when I was there in December. Traffic was bad enough already, I can just imagine when the event is on, ugh. A good place to stay away from :winkwink:

baddog 05-04-2012 11:43 AM

Pretty sure that was sarcasm, Sarah . . . . and since when are you not American?

Sarah_Jayne 05-04-2012 11:45 AM

As with any thing ..if they put in place a ton of stuff and nothing happens then they will be criticized for going overboard. However, if they don't put in enough and something does happen it will be worse. The event at the Atlanta Olympics was bad enough and no doubt the threats here are much greater.

Lets not forget that those pics posted above of the bus, etc happened THE DAY after the announcement that London got the Olympics.

The incident wasn't American...

(I am both American and British legally though).
