IIHF World Hockey Championships --- are you watching?

Great tournament so far. Defending champs - Finland.
Event held in Finland and in Sweden.

Canada, after losing in OT to team USA has battled back to be in first place in their division after a nice win over Finland today.

USA meanwhile, after beating Canada, lost their game against Slovakia and had a tough time beating Kazakhstan today and had to win it in OT. I say that not to gloat but to point out that an OT win gives your team one less point than a clean regulation win.

Russia leading all teams currently with 5 straight regulation wins and no losses, for 15 pts.

Canada has 13.
Finland: 12
Sweden: 12
Czech Rep: 11
USA: 10

Top 4 teams from the two divisions make it into the medal round.

CURRENT STANDINGS here <<<

One thing I don't get though -- I thought Finland was a major hockey-loving country? Every game I've watched so far from Helsinki, including the huge one today between Finland and Canada, has had a TON of empty seats. Are people in Finland really that busy in their lives that they can't get away to see a game or two? There were like 40 people in that arena for some of the games. Very pathetic showing by the Finnish fans, even for their own team! There are about a million people in greater Helsinki, where the hell are they all? I love the Fins, like their style of hockey, but I never expected this. Empty seats at the WORLDS? :disgust

Whatever, I'm PVRing and watching all the games. Medal round starts next week.

I wondered about that. How much costing for tickets?

Canada is about to beat up on Kazakhstan today, game starts in a few hours. Kazaks are one of those teams that can really suprise you though, as the Americans discovered yesterday. I thought it was going to be a slaughter and it turned out to be a really close game.

I wish TSN or somebody would show some of the other games in the tournament though. We only get to see Canada and USA games. Won't see team Russia or the Swedes etc until the medal round. :(

That's very strange. Russia is not so into Ice Hockey like Canada, but our state TV channels (don't even mention commercial ones) translate all the games w/o exceptions.

Yes, I'm finding it annoying. I would have liked to have seen some of the Stockholm side games. None have been broadcast here. Also none of the games on the Helsinki side other than Canada vs _______ and USA vs _________. Very weird.

Stupid to charge so much for tickets. They priced themselves right out of a ton of money and fans, obviously. I'd rather make less money than hoped for off of 10,000 fans than almost no money off of 100 fans. What they did is pure idiocy.

Nice 8-0 trouncing Canada gave Kazakhstan today though. The game I'm now looking forward to is USA vs Finland, on Tuesday I believe, that should be a good one.

CDSmith 05-13-2012 12:45 PM

USA vs Finland going on right now. Looks to be a packed house. USA leads 1-0 after 1.

Hell of a good game so far.

lucas131 05-13-2012 12:59 PM

norway germany 10:2 at beginning of 3rd, lol

CDSmith 05-14-2012 10:11 AM

Fins 0, USA 5. What a hose down.

Fins deserved to lose. Not only did they play bad but I've never seen so much diving going on, it was pathetic. The refs even bought into it once in the second period, but it didn't amount to anything gained for Finland. That dive in particular was just shameful. I felt most bad for the Finnish fans.

I started watching that game actually hoping Finland would win. They sure didn't play like defending world champions. That vicious cross-check (and resulting misconduct penalty) by one of their players didn't do their cause any justice either. What a letdown.

Far-L 05-14-2012 10:26 AM

I have been more into the handful of WHL games that have been broadcast locally. Those kids play hungry.

Yeah, a very strange game and the result. Never thought the Americans can play Ice Hockey.

this tournament is pretty good to watch but is more for younger guys that hope to make the next olympic team with a few vets from players whose teams either didn't make the playoffs or were out early.

I dont know the other teams as well but for Canada its a B or C team yet still good hockey. I wouldn't call it a tournament for losers but its not best on best so in my mind not the

"world championship"

JamesChoopa 05-14-2012 12:31 PM

Not watching because my team is still in the playoffs! LET'S GO RANGERS!!!!!!!

It's Russia and Canada's tournament so far.

Medal round on Thursday should be great.

Been watching all of Norways matches. We are normally not up there so cool to make it to the next stage. Only Canada has more goals.. :thumbsup

looks like USA is in pretty good position right now.

The Czechs are always good. I've always liked their style of play. Whenever Canada beats them there's always that sense of beating a strong opponent. And whenever we've lost to them there's never any shame in it, because like I said they're always a good team.

Thats why US went to overtime for Olympic Gold in Vancouver and Russians choked with 7:3 thrashing in quarterfinals.

Olympics is just once per 4 years. It's not just tournament of teams which didn't make it to playoffs, it's tournament of best available players which maybe won SC last year and maybe will win again next year. Plus best players of other leagues like KHL and European leagues. I think biggest problem is time zone different than US/Canada so it does not have tradition there.

While you're essentially correct on that I must point out there ARE several players on team Canada right now who are definitely not "B and C" players. Getzlaf, Kane, Sharp, Skinner, Tavares, Duncan Keith to name a few. Three of the guys I just named won the stanley cup 2 years ago. Burrows was in the cup final last year. All are standout players. Evander Kane was the NHL's youngest 30 goal scorer this year.

Is it level with our usual Olympic team caliber? No. But I still wouldn't exactly write them off as a pack of b and c players.

My PVR (DVR) has solved all that for me. I've recorded and watched at my leisure every game broadcasted so far.

This should be good.

It's gonna be great! Don't count us out btw, we have had a very good Tournament so far and the slip up in the Russian game was really just that a slip, we lead 3-1 and had 3-3 coming into last period. It just got fucked by penalties etc.

cdsmith: we will meet in the semi btw if we both advance which I hope and think. Don't know how much you have looked at Sweden and our troop this year? Here's a list of a few players you should know of:winkwink:

Henrik Zetterberg
Daniel Alfredsson
Nick Backstrom
Erik Karlsson
Nick Kronwall
Loui Eriksson
Johan Franzen

No worries, I know full lwell what Sweden brings to the table and what Canada might have to face.

And I never count the Swedes out. To do so has long been... unwise. :thumbsup

Looks like you have some problems with your mother-in-law. Does she live with you and your parents together? Boy, get rid or her and get your own home, or at least rent it. You can't live like that forever. :2 cents:

Now moving ontopic. Will be watching Russia vs Norway. Should be amusing because AFAIK it's independence day in Norway today.

LOL, no but I know how it is where you're at. Live in one bedroom apartment built in 1950's with your in-laws, kitchen smaller than my bathroom, glassed out balcony used for spare room. Boy, who you fucking kidding here. I bet your mother is yapping at you right now telling you to take out trash and get her some hotdogs and tampons.

Yes. Horrible pass by Evander Kane to no one in the slot in the 3rd though which led to their winning goal.

Slovaks are very good at taking advantage of mistakes all the while getting outplayed. Treating them as a "lesser team" is no longer a good thing to do, obviously.
