IIHF World Hockey Championships --- are you watching?
Great tournament so far. Defending champs - Finland.
Event held in Finland and in Sweden. Canada, after losing in OT to team USA has battled back to be in first place in their division after a nice win over Finland today. USA meanwhile, after beating Canada, lost their game against Slovakia and had a tough time beating Kazakhstan today and had to win it in OT. I say that not to gloat but to point out that an OT win gives your team one less point than a clean regulation win. Russia leading all teams currently with 5 straight regulation wins and no losses, for 15 pts. Canada has 13. Finland: 12 Sweden: 12 Czech Rep: 11 USA: 10 Top 4 teams from the two divisions make it into the medal round. CURRENT STANDINGS here <<< One thing I don't get though -- I thought Finland was a major hockey-loving country? Every game I've watched so far from Helsinki, including the huge one today between Finland and Canada, has had a TON of empty seats. Are people in Finland really that busy in their lives that they can't get away to see a game or two? There were like 40 people in that arena for some of the games. Very pathetic showing by the Finnish fans, even for their own team! There are about a million people in greater Helsinki, where the hell are they all? I love the Fins, like their style of hockey, but I never expected this. Empty seats at the WORLDS? :disgust Whatever, I'm PVRing and watching all the games. Medal round starts next week. GO CANADA http://www.flagkingsports.com/fks_sh...Logo%20Pin.jpg |
The Tournament of Losers. No-one watches this.

Canada is about to beat up on Kazakhstan today, game starts in a few hours. Kazaks are one of those teams that can really suprise you though, as the Americans discovered yesterday. I thought it was going to be a slaughter and it turned out to be a really close game. I wish TSN or somebody would show some of the other games in the tournament though. We only get to see Canada and USA games. Won't see team Russia or the Swedes etc until the medal round. :( |

Stupid to charge so much for tickets. They priced themselves right out of a ton of money and fans, obviously. I'd rather make less money than hoped for off of 10,000 fans than almost no money off of 100 fans. What they did is pure idiocy. Nice 8-0 trouncing Canada gave Kazakhstan today though. The game I'm now looking forward to is USA vs Finland, on Tuesday I believe, that should be a good one. |
USA vs Finland going on right now. Looks to be a packed house. USA leads 1-0 after 1.
Hell of a good game so far. |
norway germany 10:2 at beginning of 3rd, lol
|
Fins 0, USA 5. What a hose down.
Fins deserved to lose. Not only did they play bad but I've never seen so much diving going on, it was pathetic. The refs even bought into it once in the second period, but it didn't amount to anything gained for Finland. That dive in particular was just shameful. I felt most bad for the Finnish fans. I started watching that game actually hoping Finland would win. They sure didn't play like defending world champions. That vicious cross-check (and resulting misconduct penalty) by one of their players didn't do their cause any justice either. What a letdown. |
I have been more into the handful of WHL games that have been broadcast locally. Those kids play hungry.

this tournament is pretty good to watch but is more for younger guys that hope to make the next olympic team with a few vets from players whose teams either didn't make the playoffs or were out early. I dont know the other teams as well but for Canada its a B or C team yet still good hockey. I wouldn't call it a tournament for losers but its not best on best so in my mind not the "world championship" |
Not watching because my team is still in the playoffs! LET'S GO RANGERS!!!!!!!
|
It's Russia and Canada's tournament so far.
Medal round on Thursday should be great. |
Been watching all of Norways matches. We are normally not up there so cool to make it to the next stage. Only Canada has more goals.. :thumbsup
|
looks like USA is in pretty good position right now.
|

Is it level with our usual Olympic team caliber? No. But I still wouldn't exactly write them off as a pack of b and c players. Quote:

Kudos to the Slovaks, they played a good game, but damn what a stunning upset. |

Slovaks are very good at taking advantage of mistakes all the while getting outplayed. Treating them as a "lesser team" is no longer a good thing to do, obviously. |
