MPEG-DASH Anyone see an potential problems?
I have been watching this standard for quite some time, I mentioned it in the seminar on the future of the industry.
MPEG-DASH is the reason that adobe is dropping support for flash. almost everyone has announced that they are on board or they have contributed to the standard including Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, Netflix, Sony, Wowza and others, the only notable holdout is youtube/google. The standard is coming this year and JW Player and a few others have already announced support. To read more about it theres a good description of the sandard and its benefits here http://mpeg.chiariglione.org/working...a-preprint.pdf I held off on posting this because I wanted it to be fresh for XBiz Summit. Lots of people are asking me about it so here's the 411. Certainly seems like the right way to go....finally one encode and plays on any device. |
what standard does youtube/google endorse instead?

Early least year Google released a free and open standard, VP8. In response, Microsoft and Adobe pooled their patents to have a shared proprietary codec they can charge pay site owners for, mpeg-dash. |
I believe that VP8 is a compression technology (codec) to compete with H.264 (which is patented and not open source) MPEG DASH is a codec agnostic container format which supports H.264, VP6 and others...presumably could support VP8.
