Internet Censorship laws.

Google's Schmidt, Hunter Weigh in on Porn at Big Tent Event

Quote:

HERTFORDSHIRE, U.K.?Google execs took a strong stand today at the company's Big Tent event in England against the mandatory imposition by government of internet filtering or any type of censorship, even when the conversation directly targeted the sticky subject of online porn, which is now apparently the de facto elephant in the room at every such event.
The question is simple. Does a Government have the right to set censorship laws?

Please, forget about online v offline as then it could be argued the same for radio, TV, press, etc.

Then discuss.

You played yourself
Now you're pointin' fingers
How i've robbed and raped ya
Bruised and scraped ya
But those are just lies
Cause in your eyes
You've been victimized
It's how you size it up
You disguise it up
And try to make it look real
To cover up the low self esteem you feel
Introspection
And afterthought
Swimmin' in guilt's your favorite sport
But now you're caught up
In the undertow,
You never knew a man
Could sink so low
But now you know
Cause you're John Doe
In a black bag
A tag on your toe
I built the House
I felt the Pain
You're victimized
But got no one to blame

Agreed, offline law should apply to online in the country of the consumer.

Sovereign nations will do as they think best for their people (or maintaining their own power) -- that has always been so.

Is freedom of speech and the reaching of ones own conclusion a human right -- of course it is ...

I boils down to the fact set you are allowed to decide with.

Agreed.

Because it's legal in one country, doesn't make it legal world wide.

If it's illegal offline, it should be illegal online. And the other way around.

The whole idea that because it's online it shouldn't be subject to laws is an excuse for those who want to break laws.

Of course we in the US believe that by the nature of man we have the inalienable right of free speech. No politician has the right to infringe on these rights we have been endowed with.

At least, we used to believe that. Now even the adult industry seems to have forgotten that. Witness our reaction to CDA, COPA, CDA II. The very politician who just wouldn't quit trying to take away this basic freedom is treated as a hero by half of the industry.

There is no such thing as "Freedom of Speech." It's an illusion because in reality there are laws to limit what you can and can't say.

Racial Abuse is the biggest.
Followed by a lot of other abuse laws.
Slander and libel.
Censorship laws you would uphold.
Cyber stalking or bullying.

And even COPA. If a 12 year old isn't allowed into a porn shop, or watch an 18 rated movie because of the material, why should he be able to view it online? Does that infringe on his "Freedom of Speech."

The problem is implementing it without infringing on the rights of adults.

And if the material is illegal for adults to view offline, why shouldn't it be legislated against online?
