Pop song of the Summer of 2012 will of course be by a ............

Canadian

The front-runner

Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe."

Perhaps you're one of the 9 million YouTube users who have watched the Harvard University baseball team dance to this one during a van ride to an away game. A few months before that video went viral, Jepsen was touring across her native Canada in her own "soccer mom van," opening for '90s survivalist boy band Hanson.

"Show by show, we'd start to sneak a box of merch onto the Hanson tour bus so we could get away with a little more leg space," Jepsen says. "At the same time, I was negotiating the deal with Scooter Braun."

Braun is the guy who discovered Justin Bieber, who actually alerted Braun to Jepsen's existence when he heard "Call Me Maybe" on Canadian radio. Jepsen is now signed to Braun's Schoolboy Records, and "Call Me Maybe" has risen to the summit of the iTunes singles chart.

Alongside swooping strings and a disco beat that thumps like an anxious heart, Jepsen serves up the song's chorus while staring at her shoes: "Hey, I just met you/ And this is crazy/ But here's my number/ So call me, maybe?" In today's hyper-sexualized popscape, the song's appeal feels obvious. Here's a 26-year-old singing about the butterflies that usually quit flapping after adolescence.

"I think my personality is a little more coy rather than aggressive when it comes to love," says Jepsen. "There are often times when you meet somebody, and there's some chemistry, but you let it lie. ... It's scary to approach somebody."

whether it's a song for teenaged girls or not there are always summer pop songs that people of any age will recognize. you pull into a convenience store parking lot and there's a car of teenaged girls with the song blaring from the radio, you're at the cottage on the lake and it's blaring from somebody's dock, it wafts over the fence from the neighbor's backyard ......

i just heard it for the first time a few days ago, only needed to listen to 30 seconds to know it must be a pop hit.

Spunky 05-28-2012 01:28 PM

What about Policia by Loona? She's Dutch, sings in Spanish, and is a huge celebrity in Germany b/c she's dating Gina-Lisa.

Katy Perry is great. I saw her at the Victoria's Secret show a couple years ago. I had not heard of her before the show, and generally don't like that type of pop music, but was very impressed with her performance. I'm a fan.

2MuchMark 05-28-2012 03:23 PM

Thank God we Canadians have another export to enjoy besides Bryan Adams.

Slew_ 05-28-2012 03:24 PM

Imortyl Pussycat 05-28-2012 03:25 PM

the little Canadian girl performed on the recent music awards and she was cute as a button. her voice was a bit small compared to the powerful Katy Perry but nonetheless, adorable

pornmasta 05-28-2012 03:28 PM

cool in an elevator. Nowhere else.

NaughtyRob 05-28-2012 03:30 PM

That song is annoying as fuck.

yeah i get ya. i don't know why teenage girls and big business get to dictate what is 'the summer song'. i love a lot of female singers but when they are singing about lame shit like this, its for kids. give me someone like skylar grey any day.

10 years ago it was Britney Spears, 20 years ago it was Debbie Gibson - what don't you get?
I guess 13 year old girls in 2012 should be listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Sex Pistols :helpme

the Shemp 05-28-2012 08:32 PM

but why do 13 year old girls determine what is popular? thats what i don't get.

Slick 05-29-2012 08:13 AM

I'd just like to know why you'd throw a wish in a well, that dumb bitch doesn't know how it works, ha ha.

I'm sorry, but that Harvard baseball team is more annoying than the song itself, ha ha. Some people think it's cute and funny, but I don't see anything remotely funny about it, it's just fucking retarded.

Tom_PM 05-29-2012 08:14 AM

First you hook the girls, then the girls hook the boys, then you get the money.

because teenagers unlike adults don't have their heads occupied with real world worries, they have endless amount of time for for entertainment, when i was that age i could name every song/artist on the Top 100 charts, name every player on every major league sports team, every actor on every TV series - when you get older you have lots of other shit to think about. teenagers have lots of discretionary money to spend, from parents mostly though lots do have part time jobs and it all gets spent on movies, music, clothes, fast food.

candyflip 05-29-2012 08:49 AM

I just heard my 4 year old singing the chorus a little while ago.
