Stupid Fucking SatNavs! Can you explain this?

I bought a cheap 'Garmin' satnav in 2007 with 2006 maps on it. Just decided to look at updating it to the latest maps - the 2013 versions...

Update costs me $119 - (£77) But its an 8 gig download...

Or, I can just buy the brand new, latest Garmin model, WITH the 2013 maps preinstalled (and many extra features, plus a years guarantee)

For $101 - (£66) ?

How the FUCK can an 'Update' to an existing device, cost more, than a complete new device, with the info already on it???

It dont make any sense at all...

It does actually.

Porting new software to older tech often is more expensive, especially when the newer software was build specifically with newer tech in mind.

Yeah, but its just the maps. The road layouts. It doesn't give me any extra features.

OpenStreetMaps can be converted to work on Garmin units.

been there done that, with my last unit. So I decided to get a brand new Tom Tom on sale, it was like 1/2 price includes free lifetime map upgrades, how ever long that is.

But wait, if I sent in coupon that was in the package, if my car breaks down, they will include a free tow, to the nearest location of the chain store where I bought it. A local tow costs $75-100:thumbsup

I bought a satnav app for my iPhone. Cost 79p. Uses open street maps. And is awesome. Even has speed cams data!

My comment was not really so much about the actual cost per-say, but that a new unit, with additional capabilities way above my model, is a cheaper option than simply upgrading the maps.

A feature that my mint condition, perfectly good and fully working device, supports!

Seems stupid to just throw a perfectly good device away, but if its cheaper to get a new model, with a full years guarantee, then I suppose I will.

Like I say, it just seems daft...

I mean, give me a fair price for the map updates, and I remain a customer. But who's to say I wont buy a competitors product next time?

Its like a site setting a sign up price for a month at $29.99, then $19.99 per month afterwards. Perfectly normal and fair.

But you wouldn't set the price at $29.99 the first month, then $64.99 each month after would you ? lol
