N. Korean Missile Reportedly Can Hit U.S.

WASHINGTON - North Korea has an untested ballistic missile capable of reaching the western United States, intelligence officials said Wednesday.

The North Korean missile is a three-stage version of the Taepo Dong 2, said Vice Adm. Lowell Jacoby, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

It has not been flight-tested, Jacoby said, leaving some questions about the North Korea's capability to successfully launch the missile.

CIA Director George J. Tenet, who joined Jacoby in briefing the Senate Armed Services Committee, also acknowledged the North Koreans have the capability to reach the western United States with a long-range missile.

Previous U.S. intelligence reports have said such a missile probably could carry a nuclear weapon-sized payload across the Pacific Ocean.

North Korea is no Iraq. North Korea has a 1 million man Army. The U.S. right now has 150,000 troops in middle east waiting to invade IRAQ. Obviously U.S. has many more troops, but for comparison sakes, imagine what would happen in a war situation with NorthKorea vs U.S.A

It will be devestating. The casualties on the U.S. side would be at least 100,000. That may sound rediculous, but consider this. North Korea would nuke South Korea. There is 35000 U.S. troops in South Korea alone, and that number is increasing. Then they would nuke Japan, and kill many U.S. civilian and troops there. Of course they would be destroyed in the process, but North Korea would do major damage to any country in a war.

On Nightline a few weeks ago, they had some experts on, the expert on North Korea said if a full scale war broke out, the casualties for the U.S. would be 500,000. North Korea is no joke.

Well, not really. You have to detect it at launch and try to destroy it there.. When it reaches the United States, it's a bit too late, unless you use some kind of missile defense system (not yet developped).

It's bad enough we all HAVE to die.. now we got all these crazy leaders running around threatening to speed up the process.

I bet communication centres would be the target of missiles too.. Knocking out infrastructure is the first thing you should do if going to attack..

No way was that ever "the mother of all battles" and IRAQ was not even close to having the 4th largest army in the world.

Don't fogot, IRAQ has a 8 year war with IRAN a few years before the gulf war started. Something like 1-3 million people died from both sides. IRAQ would not even be in the top 20 as far as military strength back then.

Right now, I would say they prolly are not even in the top 30. They are no North Korea.

I'm not worried... they can't hit Detroit. Besides, if you've ever been here it's like a bomb was already dropped.

yes there might be only 35k of US troops in south korea

but there is over 1 million south korean troops,,

I believe the U.S. has 1000 times more Nukes than N Korea right now (they have 4 I think, U.S. has at least 4000, prolly more)

By "weak", I don't quite mean the U.S. will ever be weak, I am reffering to the fact that during a war with IRAQ when they have deployed many troops and specially equipment to the middle east, the U.S. military will be 'weaker' than when it is not engaged in a war with another country(even though IRAQ is not a much of a match for the U.S.)

No doubt it would be suicide for North Korea to attack the U.S., but than again, the sanity of North Korea's leader is seriously in doubt, so I don't put anything past him.

its a misconception that the Iraqi's didn't put up a defense against the US.

the Iraqi's Republican Guard were season soldiers who fought very hard and many died,

they just wasn't no match to the US technology and weaponry,

just because the US had extremely small casualties didn't mean the Iraq did fight hard

North Korea will never get a nuke off, ever.

The US most likely knows where their silos are. When and if it becomes clear that N. Korea might launch, they will send in the F115s or B1s (2s? can never remember) and Durandal/Clusterbomb the shit out of those silos.

Intercepting it in the air is not really an option AFAIK, but the US is not stupid, and they have enough power to take out those silos.

Of course, that would probably set NK off and they would invade SKorea, but they wouldn't be tossing any nukes across the ocean.

well, maybe they did fight well, I couldn't tell you either way(although I remmeber a group of them surrendering to a CNN crew, heh), but I was just pointing out that no way were they the 4th strongest army in the world in 1992. There was easily 10 countries with much better and more disciplined armies than IRAQ back then, and there are even more today.

I think North Korea themselves has now officially admited they have nuklear weapons, and the state department has confirmed it. This is common knowledge, right?

If you have a better way of getting confirmation on wether North Korea has nuclear weapons or not, short of me going down to North Korea and taking a survey from their leader, please share.

Where are you getting that "4" number from? It hasn't even been proven that they have ONE functional nuke, only that they're probably developing them.

We'll deal with NK swiftly and decisively when the time comes, if it comes.

the "4 nukes" was according to source at the state department posted on MSNBC a few months ago. I can only go off of what I have read. Contrary to popular belief, I am not a North Korea nuklear scientist, so I can't give you an accurate number. :winkwink:
