Yesterday I was talking to a buddy of mine who lives in a historically working-class Irish neighborhood of Philly called Fishtown. Like a lot of other inner city neighborhoods all over the Northeast, over the past decade or so it's becoming increasingly gentrified. Hordes of these upper-middle class twenty-something, ultra-PC white liberals have been swarming in like they're giving away free Vespas and non-prescription thick rimmed Paul Pfeiffer glasses.

One of these types just moved onto my buddy's block. So he's outside talking to the kid the other day and he asks him how he likes the neighborhood so far. Kid says to him "Well, I just wish Fishtown was more diverse." My buddy pressed him a little bit to see exactly what he meant. Kid says "It's a very white neighborhood." Basically what the kid was saying to him was "I need a certain amount of brown people around me to alleviate my white liberal guilt."

Fishtown has been a white Irish neighborhood for as long as anyone still alive can remember. It's not a big secret. Fishtown is as Irish as Passyunk Square is Italian as Fairhill is Puerto Rican as Germantown is Black. What pisses me off is that this asshole specifically chose to move into a predominately white neighborhood then ? perhaps in an effort to show how open minded and tolerant he is ? starts complaining that there aren?t enough minorities around. Which is fucking ridiculous when you think about it. That's like moving to fucking Chinatown and complaining that there aren't enough Swedish people around.

You won't catch one of these liberals moving to Germantown, though - which is ripe for gentrification, by the way - you won't catch them moving up there. Because underneath all the superficial "we are the world" bullshit, all the shit they picked up in Cultural Studies class at their liberal arts college about how our entire American society is built for the sole purpose of crushing and belittling minorities that they love to regurgitate, underneath all of that they are scared of minorities, so they go out of their way to prove how unracist they are. They got no problem mocking some freckle faced drunk ex-con with shamrock tattoos on his neck standing outside the corner bar behind his back, though.

Go back to fucking Bryn Mawr or Wayne or Cherry Hill or whatever fucking Caddyshackesque neighborhood it is you came from. Better yet, go up to Williamsburg, Brooklyn; that should be diverse enough for you.

Don't mistake my anger for any oldshool "they got their neighborhood, we got ours" bullshit. That's the type of thinking that leads good people to hate other good people without even getting to know them, but Oh how I hate these types of liberals who scrutinize eveything looking for any possible hint of racism, sexism, anti-semitism, anti-feminism, homophobia, transphobia, whatever they call hating disabled people, etc. etc. Hunting in every nook and cranny for evidence of "privilege" and when they find any hint of it they have to champion the cause by seeking grievances. And I'm a goddamn borderline socialist, too, but PC liberals like this make left wingers like me look like pussies. So if you do this please stop because you look like a hypocritical douchebag.

i can agree with the guy being an idiot about 'diversity', the only people who give a shit about so called diversity are white people, the ethnic peoples couldn't give a shit about diversity. they are here for the opportunities and im sure would rather prefer their own kind over diverse craving white boy.

however i don't see how this makes him a 'liberal'. it seems the word 'liberal' has become a catch all phrase (almost becoming some kind of slur) for certain people who want to polarize any thoughts or ideas that oppose their own.

Who's blaming anybody for any problems? Not really sure where you got that from. This type of person is the apotheosis of the ultra-liberal, and I'm sure if you asked him he'd love to tell you as much. Chinese food? If he wanted a cosmopolitan atmosphere he should have moved to Center City. For all of his preaching about tolerance he certainly doesn't respect the historical culture of the place he chose to move to. Maybe I should have worded the title a little differently...

Not sure how he qualifies as liberal. Or how that word really means anything these days since it's been thrown at every one from Genghis Kahn to Hitler. Maybe if more people spent the extra time to find things they can agree with other people on and less on reasons to argue it would be a lot nicer planet. Kid probably didn't mean any harm, he's just trying to fit in and be comfortable where he lives. He didn't choose his parents or his upbringing and if he's moving to some recently gentrified area I would doubt it's with their blessing, so I'd say cut him a break.

Place is so fucking dull that all new house must be grey or beige and in cull-DE-sacs. There are 2 businesses grandfathered in with neon signs. A few years back they demanded a new White Castle become the 'beige castle' as white wasn't approved for building exteriors.
