Websites Will Be Forced To Identify Trolls

Quote:

Websites will be legally obliged to provide victims with the identity of people who post abusive and defamatory online messages about them under plans by the Government.
Major reforms of the libel laws will also see internet service providers given greater protection from being sued if they help to identify so-called internet trolls.

About time.

Jakez 06-11-2012 11:57 PM

Damn, now what are you going to do all day?

J. Falcon 06-12-2012 02:34 AM

Half the people on GFY will need to tell us who the hell they are.

It's more about those who bully, lie and continually throw insults.

IMO on boards a heavier hammer should be in place. But that might slow the board down wit post counts. :Oh crap

1. Its a UK law, so any sites outside the UK will not have to do anything.

2. People will simply use fake info. Sites will set up to tell them how to hide there info. They will just set up fake facebook accounts.

The simple option is such as facebook and twitter to simply provide advice to people.

I tell people to simply never read private messages sent to you on twitter. I am not sure why twitter does not alow you to turn this off.

Facebook could alow you to have a much higher security option if you wanted. One thought I had was if you were under the age of 16, to get facebook accounts you would have to do this at your school using a headmasters facebook computer account. By this schools would have to apply to facebbok for a school account and students could anly get an account if the headmaster approved it. It would reduce the liklyhood of people pretending to be kids on facebook two. If they realy wanted to facebook could request id from everyone before they got a facebook account.

you must remembver that its a uk law and can only apply to those in the uk.

the reason being is that we (in the uk) have a law that goes back a lot of years that was set up to protect phone operaters from abuse. this is the time when you had to phone an operator to be put through to somone. however the wording of the law for some reason applies to the net. also under uk l;aw there are things that you are not alowed to transmit (originaly only applied to radio/tv, but totay its being applied to the net). these are what people in the uk are being prosecuted on.

so if somone in say germany trolls you, they cannot be prosecuted (unless germany has such laws).

in truth this law is 'proberbly' more about the uk goverment looking as if they are doing somthing, rather than achiving anything.

its unlikly to stop people.

you alsop have the interpritation of what being a troll is. ie, some people set up facebook pages if somone they know has died. then get upset when people post somthing rude. to be i would never set such a page up as to me its rather tacky, and in truth i do not have sypothy if your page gets twits posting on it.

The other problem is that what one person may see as being abusiver, another may see as comerdy.

in the uk we probably have much harsher comedians than any other country. i suspect many in the usa would be shocked by what uk comedians say and i have noticed on some uk chatshows some of the usa guests are rather surprised by what the chatshow host says as they are used to everyone being super nice.

its a bit like when that singer showed her boob at the superbowl. in nearly started ww3. yet in the uk no one cares if a man or woman goes fully nude and runds around on the pitch. in the 80's it was almost every game. and the holidays shows we had (i sure miss them) often had the camera man on the beach filming topless bathers (that was a family tea time show).

yet go to france all there comedians seem to be toilet and fart jokes.

so what is offencive to one person, to another is nothing.

Phoenix 06-12-2012 04:05 AM

report your neighbour...its the law!!!

Still... those who lie? It's vague and quite frankly, incredibly stupid to create laws like that :1orglaugh

You claim you are innocent of this !!!!!

ottopottomouse 06-12-2012 05:06 AM

Clueless as always.

DVTimes 06-12-2012 05:32 AM

by the way paul, you do0 not live in the uk, so this probably will not affect you much.

in fact you could troll as much as you want as even if somnone found your details, there would be nothing they could do, unless they under eu rules got you sent back to the uk for trial (which i suspect is not going to happen).

Are these sites going to back trace it?

Babaganoosh 06-12-2012 06:14 AM

Lawmakers in ANY country are ignorant when it comes to technology. Any geek worth his salt can completely hide his identity and cover his tracks online, I can join a forum, stir shit and disappear like a fart on a windy day and nobody would ever know who I was and wouldn't have a good way to find me.

nico-t 06-12-2012 06:23 AM

fucking stupid. Big brother keeps on growing.

pornguy 06-12-2012 06:38 AM

So any one can ask for the info the site owner will have to turn it over??

Wait until the first person gets killed. that will end that.

obviously it would be the authorities who collected that information... damn..

people should be accountable for their actions. Anyone saying they are harmless because its in text form obviously haven't read the news in the last few years. It's not a freedom of speech issue in the least. Nobody can threaten you in front of witnesses without breaking the law and possibly arrested. Why should it be any different when its typed?

It shows a Government is starting to realise old laws need changing now in the Internet times.

The law is to release the site owners from prosecution if they help the identify the perpetrator. Then that person will be prosecuted.

Whether it will work or not is a problem. When it doesn't they go to the next step.

Sad to see so many here in favor of not doing anything to stop the bullying and hate that some individuals enjoy dishing out. What if it were your teenage child or yourself?

Glen sees the point. :thumbsup

Agreed. We have seen it many times on GFY alone where people take their hatred and vendettas too fucking far. Including threatening people's families, real life jobs, livelihood, etc.. There should be limits period.

Exactly. Mentally disturbed individuals who apparently lack any real social skills who buy into some sort of keyboard warrior cyber duels to "teach some complete stranger a lesson". These people who, are clearly detached from reality, should be locked up for the good of themselves, and others before someone gets hurt.

Well to tell you the truth, if you get a quick look at how the internet is changing faster and faster, pretty much everything done on the web is starting to get more and more easy to see and public . Some of the "big once" online are changing their privacy policy's pretty damn often lately. I'ma start wearing a paper bag while watching porn!

CyberHustler 06-12-2012 07:29 AM

Community owners need trolls, so I can see admins helping trolls hide their identity and find loop holes instead to keep shit moving along.

Radical Bucks 06-12-2012 07:44 AM

This is great news! Merry Christmas!

Barry-xlovecam 06-12-2012 07:47 AM

Why stop at that?

Make it illegal to be stupid or to have bad taste ...

So ordered "The Troll Patrol"

No it's not. I have met these trolls in real life and they are pleasant and friendly. Damian, lovely guy when I was facing him, Geezer a troll on B&B didn't have the nerve to walk across the room and confront me, even though on a board he's for ever calling me names and a cunt. Recently said he would kill me if we met.

Truth is they're all wind and the chance of them getting identified or meeting their victims will shut them up.
