Hostgator VPS
Anyone using a VPS with Hostgator and how do they find it? I'm looking at putting a forum on it with 200 - 300 users online at busy times.

I've got a Hostgator VPS which I'm happy with, but the Hostgator shared would do the job fine, it's $15 per month, the so-called "Unlimited" package.
Out of all of the hosts I've tried they are hands down the best, I could warn you about other hosts specifically, but it's been a few years now so they might have improved. |

went through Id say 15 hosts... buncha bullshit but what really set me off is they would change database passwords randomly and without warning. Id just have to find a blog or something fucked up and go through ERVERY single database I had with them and redo config files... Tell me how any host ever should EVER EVER Do anything at ALLLLLLL like that. |
they are the best, never had any issue with them in 5 years
|
I wouldn't put anything important on there.
|
Works fine for me. I have three servers and an account at Hostgator for tests and they have never failed me.

Hostgator makes their money by overselling their services.
Do you really want to take the gamble that somebody else's sites are going to be busy at the same time yours are, bringing the server resources to a crawl? Trying to save a few bucks could end up costing you when all is said and done. Check out what I can offer you. Its a few bucks more than Hostgator, but it is also fully-managed ... We mind your server, so that you don't have to! https://gfy.com/showthread.php?p=19020268#post19020268 . |

That's not good, my experience has been perfect so far, whereas other hosts I haven't been able to contact for 2 days, then they pull your site because they didn't think you paid, but it turned you paid via Paypal which they didn't keep records for

Host Gator gets horrible reviews.

I usually never speak poorly of my competition, but by the same token, I am not being malicious here, I am merely repeating what is well documented on google already. :Oh crap |
Hostgator is the Walmart or Harbor Freight of hosting - low end, based on massive volume, and perfectly adequate for a really basic site. Others, like Amerinoc, are more suited to professionals.
I buy a lot of things at Walmart, like paper plates and cat litter. However, if I were a professional mechanic I would NOT buy my tools at Walmart. A professional webmaster hosting their business at Hostgator is a lot like an auto mechanic buying Walmart (or Harbor Freight) tools. Hostgator does have reasonably good customer service for really basic things. On the other hand, they aren't allowed in the datacenter where the servers are, and that kind of thing means they can't (and don't want to) provide the level of service that profesionals demand. |
I've been with them for years and it's always been superb, most others I've spoken to have had the same experience.

If you are happy with them, then that's all that really matters! :thumbsup Some like to drive BMWs .... while others are very content spending ¼ the amount to drive a KIA. Freedom of choice is a healthy thing! :winkwink: |

I'm talking about Shared, not about BMW's, for shared Hostgator is about as good as shared gets, but if someone needs dedicated i.e. BMW, then you're probably right, going for the Walmart won't be the best idea

Anyway, I don't want to lose you guys business, as in general I like to support the little guy. I feel compelled to pay back Hostgator for their good service over the years, but I'll leave now as this is a conflict for me.
|
its all cool wehateporn ... everybody is entitled to their opinion, and business should not be lost over voicing your opinion.
If HG works well for what you require, that's great for you ... Like I said, I do not believe in force-feeding my ideals down somebody's throat .. I'd rather present the facts and educate the consumer, and then let them make the choice they feel comfortable with ... A client that feels like they've been pressured into something, is not an easy client to maintain .. |

I'm surprised a lot of people here don't browse WHT to look for new hosts...I've had a lot of good luck with mainstream providers. |
I have accounts and servers with 5 different hosts now. Hostgator has been just fine for us for light stuff.

host gator the bomb

used HostGator years ago for a reseller account before I got into VPS/Servers, support was quick the problem was I always needed them as server was constantly overloaded.
Me: sites are slow Them: we have booted the offending site that was slowing down the server problem is this happened all the time. Currently have not so important sites on GoDaddy and believe it or not actually run pretty good compared to years ago when they weren't so hot, for sites that make bank I would never move from Liquid Web as I monitor all my sites with 1 minute monitoring and this is the only place I have used out of 10+ over the years that shit is always up and feel good knowing servers are in their own data center and housed close to home in Michigan. |

While A1 remains it's own identity (mostly due to A1's search engine positions and brand identity), all of our resources have been pooled. |
All my blogs stuff is hosted at hostgator no complains here, Good Support even weekend ...
