That show just kind of bored me to death. Its fucking television. Why even bother looking at it?

epitome 07-09-2012 07:46 PM

So did Gus actually have a family or was that just part of his wholesome image?

THANK YOU! I kept saying to Tofu that there is no way they so clearly showed us kid's toys, etc in his house without a reason.

He strategically invited people he wanted to partner with to his house. Are you more likely to partner with the big bad gangster or the wholesome family man that just so happens to own the meth market? I think it was part of the mind games he liked to play.

SOURFEET 07-09-2012 09:12 PM

One of the best shows of all time. Up there with The Wire and Sopranos for me. Can't wait for the new season to start on the 15th.

Best show I've seen in years. What a killer ending in that last season.

Which is something I have considered but on the other hand, Walt isn't as easy to pull one over on these days. I expected a child or a partner to show up at some point.

Still..he had one of the best deaths ever.

Horny Dude 07-09-2012 09:47 PM

Not the beat show, but it's up there. A few episodes each season kind of dragged. I'm curious to see how they wrap it up.

I can't get Tofu to watch The Wire. I keep telling him that there are two types of people - those that resist The Wire and those that finally watch is and understand how good it was.

I'm very eager to find out who Gus was in Chile and why he was so concerned about the DEA or anyone knowing about his past. What's he hiding, who is he! Don Eladio only allowed him to live because he knew who he was.

He definitely comes back in Season 5 as he's in a teaser trailer. I wonder how Mike will feel about Walt/Jesse if he assumes they killed Gus while he was gone recovering in Mexico. Mike seemed to only have a working allegiance to Gus and not a personal connection, so not sure he would necessarily feel like he had to avenge Gus's death since he's not employed anymore.

I didn't think that and didn't think the show was trying to indicate that. However, I can see how one might think that based on his meticulous nature and style of dress.

I know, I know...I'm just resisting adding another series to the "edge-of-your-seat-watching" list. I know ONE day, I will watch The Wire, but Weeds has started and DDexter is coming back and SOA, Walking Dead....it's truly overwhelming!:(

Prioritize my friend.

Weeds was dead four years ago!

When does Sons of Anarchy start up again? I watched the whole series in four days a few months ago, LOL.

THANK YOU! We have HBO On Demand which means there is no excuse and I feel that if he is going to watch the Wire (and he should because I KNOW he will love it) it should be an experience I get to share with my best friend. I wasn't there when his kids were born or he got his first pubes. I should be there for when he 'gets' the Wire.

The working allegiance Vs personal connection makes sense with Mike considering Walt approached Mike about killing Gus and Mike decided to beat up Walt and I'd assume he didn't mention that conversation to Gus

I dunno why but I hadn't even considered that as a possibility

Here's what has me puzzled, how can Hank NOT know that Walt is Heisenberg? Hank is a very intelligent DEA officer, by season 4 I was starting to wonder how he hadn't put all the pieces together.

Hopefully that'll be a major plot feature in season 5, Hank has already joked with Walt about him being involved when he asks Walt to help him look at the Gale Boetticher investigation and mentions maybe the WW in Gales notes means Walter White

IMO The Wire is better than Dexter, Weeds, SOA & Walking Dead put together :2 cents:

All those series are a solid 8/10 but The Wire is a complete and utter 10/10!

I agree but I must admit it is harder to get into as some of those other shows because it really starts off at a crawl and the story moves like a novel would. Doesn't make it any less awesome but its tough to see how things pan out and once you see what happens you are dying to get back and start it over to see what you missed--which makes it tougher to convince people as well heh.

breaking bad has you on the edge of your seat almost throughout, other than the wife drama anyway. So I wouldn't really use the wire as a comparison for that reason.

I couldn't agree more!

A friend of mine actually made the same analogy last week when comparing Breaking Bad & The Wire, best Thriller Vs best Novel :thumbsup

It's a real shame there are so few TV Shows that are 10/10, I find it so difficult to watch shows like Dexter & The Walking Dead because they're just not on the same level, not even close!

Although it's always nice to have a show to look forward to viewing and man I cannot wait for season 5 of Breaking Bad!

Right. He told me he watched the first episode once. It isn't an 'instant' grab because it is, as you say, a novel. Then all of a sudden, you can't put it down.

In my humble opinion...

Gus is gay. The flashback to his meeting between him, his cook and the cartel boss made me think his cook was also his lover. Perhaps he is asexual now, numb through decades of playing the game and loosing people he cares for, but the look in his eyes when his lover was killed showed he truely loved at one point.

Walt will be the reason Walt dies... but I feel Mike will have a big part to play. Since Walt appeared, Mikes life has gotten annoyingly dramatic. There he was: ex-cop collecting drug money, doing a bit of recon, murdering the odd deadbeat rival and getting paid nicely by his drug czar employer. Then comes along Walt to fuck up everything. Mike hates Walt.

Hank is clever, but has known Walt for many years. It'd be fair to assume that Walt has done absolutely nothing exciting at all in all those years. It's so beyond his expactation, but not normal reasoning, to assume Walt is capable of being the super cook for the local meth king, Gus. To us, using deductive reasoning, of course it's Walt. Chemistry expert. Comes in to a lot of money. Hank just sees Walt as his goofy brother-in-law as he has done for the last 10 years. However, I reckon the writers will either have Hank either die because of Walt, find out his secret or both.

Gus' background and the Cartel will probably be a major part in Walts demise as well. The cartel will want to fill the vacum created by Gus' death.

Will Walt want to fill it? He loves the power now. He loves the winning just as much. Will he build a new lab?

I cannot wait.

its like one real long movie, thats pretty much what keeps you glued to it. Not cheesy cliff hangers or anything, just solid story telling not to mention premium acting. It's amazing how well those shows grab you with great characters all over the place.

Dexter i like, but i would agree that theres not quite as much going on. I started watching i think season 3 or 4 and was caught up with almost anything, if yoiu do that with the wire there is a whole world you miss out on.

oh watched a bit of walking dead pilot this weekend, seemed to be interesting anyway.

Another thing with The Wire that some people I know have mentioned is that right at the start they drop you in the middle of the story. They don't introduce you to these people slowly or give you any background. In a way it is like you are on your first day on a new job and everyone else there knows each other, has things going on and you have to get to know them and what is happening. It is a brilliant method of storytelling, but for those who like easy to follow stuff it can be a turn off.

Still, once you get 3-4 episodes into it and you know who the people are and what is going on it is sheer and utter genius.

Great post. I never once considered Gus to be gay but now I wonder... He did take the death of his partner personally when everyone else is expendable. In a way, almost everything he did was to avenge that guys death.

Does anyone wonder if Gus' roots is government? A big multi-national owns his chicken place and a ton of other things. I wonder if that multi-national is owned by members of the government of Chile (or wherever he's from). I've wondered if he comes from a dictator family.
