I ran freebsd as a desktop for a few years... Managed dozens of servers running free and open obviously.

sheken 07-10-2012 09:37 AM

still have a box running FreeBSD 5.4 which I didn't update because it simply runs without problems. Been running fine for 7 years, same client on it. I just updated ports recently and I have Apache 2.0.64/PHP 5.4.4 running without problems. Proves how reliable FreeBSD is

Emil 07-10-2012 09:39 AM

ya, I got it on one machine

Vapid - BANNED FOR LIFE 07-10-2012 09:49 AM

The tradeoff of idiot proofing for all that speed is worthwhile.

CYF 07-10-2012 10:12 AM

I run fbsd on my servers, and my netbook.

malcarada 07-10-2012 12:00 PM

I run FreeBSD on my laptop, unfortunately I can not make it my main OS because I need to run Windows only software for my job, otherwise I would make FreeBSD my main operating system.

Why 07-10-2012 02:38 PM

i havent used BSD in a while. kinda miss it.

sandman! 07-10-2012 02:52 PM

all bsd here no centos servers no more :)

facialfreak 07-10-2012 03:01 PM

Kinda ...

I'm on a MacBook Pro (OSX is BSD-based)

Until about 2007, most of our servers were running FreeBSD, but since we mostly run CentOS, and a few Ubuntu Server.

u-Bob 07-10-2012 03:14 PM

still got more than a few freebsd boxes here and there :)

Yeah, its almost ten minutes long. So what?

mce 07-10-2012 04:03 PM

I am really tempted to switch to freebsd as my desktop OS

XXXInsights 07-10-2012 04:04 PM

My nas is based on freebsd

Babaganoosh 07-10-2012 05:18 PM

I used to but I'm running Debian now. Much less hassle and just as fast and stable.

shake 07-10-2012 05:38 PM

I've got a couple OpenBSD servers

fris 07-11-2012 06:03 AM

just finishing up a shell script for freebsd and wordpress

vdbucks 07-11-2012 06:07 AM

I tried using freebsd as a desktop OS once, but then after noticing how most of the software I installed was done via ports from linux, I no longer see the point and went back to linux ><

For a server though, I hear they're quite good... but I'll stick with debian anyway.

rowan 07-11-2012 06:08 AM

I run FreeBSD on both my local and remote servers. :)

AdultEUhost 07-11-2012 08:38 AM

we do freebsd a lot

BradBreakfast 07-11-2012 09:14 AM

We use BSD in out custom purpose built routers. If you are interested in using it on the desktop, I highly recommend PC-BSD 9+.

kazymjir 07-11-2012 09:21 AM

I was using OpenBSD on my home server

BradBreakfast 07-11-2012 09:58 AM

For webservers, I really think CentOS is the way to go.

Vapid - BANNED FOR LIFE 07-11-2012 09:59 AM

The Berkley standard distribution was built to handle ddosing

Used to run FreeBSD on my production servers but recently changed to CentOS because software like ffmpeg and such is always behind on BSD and I needed latest versions for my CMS.

I still use BSD for some home servers. Love it.

You could compile ffmpeg by yourself instead of waiting for packages. Sources are always available at first and you will always had to wait until packagers create new pkgs.

Yeah you could, but BSD works best when you use the built-in ports system. And unfortunately the ports are not always up to date with versions available on linux. Also if I recall I had a situation where i needed a package that wasn't available on my version of BSD i was running.

I didn't want to make the switch but had to do what was best for production.

If you set compilation flags and other stuff properly, you can get better results than from packages. Good old Gentoo works this way - setting custom compilation settings to get the most of your hardware.

Unfortunately, true. Linux is a lot more popular and more widely used, so it takes priority.

End result is the most important thing. If your server works better after the switch, you did a good move :thumbsup

I love Arch Linux :thumbsup the only distros I use regularly are Debian and Arch

just a punk 07-16-2012 02:17 AM

I was trying it on a desktop (PC-BSD). The only serious problem is a lack of drivers and software for it. It's very easy to find almost everything for Linux, but not for BSD.

As about the Windows applications, so most of them run pretty well in wine on both BSD and Linux systems.
