While I am one of the most liberal people on this forum I do happen to think that we have the right to firearm ownership. While I do not personally own any for either home defense or for any sporting use that does not mean others should be denied them if they are not a convicted felon or under psychiatric care.

The recent shooting was tragic but even if you outlawed guns those who really wanted them to engage in criminal activity would not have much of a problem getting ahold of one if they tried. There are millions of gun owners in the US who are responsible and law abiding. Why should they be punished for the irrational or criminal behavior of a few?

Banning movie theaters in America would be much more effective in preventing another tragedy like yesterdays. I bet that would fly.

Ideally yes. But it wouldn't be practical given how many guns are already on the market. I live in a country where guns are banned, where not even the cops carry guns. And like CamTraffic quoted from Matthey Chapman. Not having guns floating around gives you a freedom from fear. People don't go around being afraid that perhaps around the next corner some nutjob is waiting with a gun.

No, and here is why:

1) Banning guns does not take them away from criminals, which is exactly why you should be allowed to have one.

2) Guns are not the problem, people are. People are violent / crazy and will use anything at their disposal. I live in a country where guns are difficult to legally obtain. What do the locals do? They build their own one shot guns, they buy expensive 2nd hand guns illegally, and they stab the shit out of people and beat them with clubs. In fact, I've never seen a country where so many people get stabbed. They get stabbed because it is very expensive to get a gun and most people can't afford one.

I'm all for making it more difficult to get one, but that still doesn't stop a loon or a criminal from getting one.

The thing about guns is, they ALL have to be banned and taken away in order for a ban to work. That includes police and the military, who I may add is the #1 supplier of illegal guns to many countries. But if they could somehow dispose of ALL guns in the world, I would support that 110%.

Truth be told, if I want to kill you, there are lots of ways to do it. I could silently shoot 10+ people with a compound bow from the back row of a movie theater before anyone even knew what was going on. Crazy people are crazy and are going to use whatever weapon they have at their disposal.

I think the question to ask is, why do these people snap? Not should we ban guns.

There were about 250 people in the theatre. 2.7% of Colorado residents are licensed to carry, so there were about 7 people licensed and trained who could have put a stop to the attack, if not for the fact that Colorado banned guns in movie theatres. As he walked up the aisle, he turned his back on seven law abiding citizens who had to leave their pistols in their cars, so a half a dozen of the deaths are a direct result of the ban.

The psycho stopped to RELOAD. As he did, seven licensed, trained citizens watched in horror, their pistols out in there cars because of the theatre ban. If you supported bans, their blood is on your hands.

There has never, in the history of the world, been a mass shooting at a gun range, where everybody is able to protect themselves and those around them.

Getting rid of guns/knifes/explosives/hammers is not going to stop strangulation and beating deaths of females and children.

My wife and I had this same discussion last night. I carry a handgun every day. Sometimes I open carry and sometimes conceal carry, depending on what I'm doing that day. I am a firm believer that guns are not the problem. Criminals are going to get guns regardless if there's a ban on them or not. And I believe that if someone wants to kill people, they're going to kill people with or without guns, they will find a way.

It's a tragedy what happened in the movie theater, but I agree with raymor. I know a lot of licensed gun carriers aren't military trained (or any REAL formal training for that matter. However, some are required to per state law), but if there would have been even two armed citizens in that theater, the outcome could have been changed dramatically.

Luckily for me, the state in which I live allows me to exercise my rights freely in most places. I very rarely enter a place where I am forced to disarm by law (the "no guns allowed" signs on doors of businesses really have no merit with the law in my state. The owner can ask you to leave, and if you don't, then there's a trespassing issue). I wouldn't consider myself excessively paranoid, but I do have a strong urge to protect both my family and I.
