Making money with tumblr.

Anyone making decent money with tumblr blogs? I was testing a few things out here and there. The traffic didn't seem to stick. Most of it is just within the tumblr network it seems. Anyone have any luck squeezing some good $$$ out of this?

B.Barnato 07-28-2012 08:16 AM

Yes.

Connect a keyword rich .com domain to a keyword rich tumblr url, matching as closely as possible.

Post images and make sure to give 3 to 8 word descriptions for each.

Make use of tags.

I have roughly 80% google traffic, ignoring internal tumblr traffic but make sure to use a link with anchor text in my image descriptions every once in a while.

Sorry I'm a bit slow today....so you're saying if I have let's say flashboobs.com then I should pic up the tumblr url flashboobs.tumblr.com and use tumblr to build that .com domain?

What do you mean by "Connect a keyword rich .com domain to a keyword rich tumblr url, matching as closely as possible."?

Sorry saturday slow down brain syndrome today. :Oh crap

LiveDose 07-28-2012 08:21 AM

Yes, but then:

In your tumblr admin panel, under blog settings you have the option of adding a custom domain name.

Do that.

Treat your tumblr as you would a normal blog, not some social media twitter gadget.

Optimize your tumblr, under customize theme, fill in title and description. Use the sidebar to your full advantage.

Ignore following other users, pick a theme that is easy to navigate and that does not require the user to click on images to view in full size. I use the default theme on most of my tumblrs.

Use the queue function to provide regular updates and post good quality content.

Focus on time spent on site and returning visitors.

beks001 07-28-2012 08:32 AM

I have a couple that get a few hits a day but nothing major. It seems like the directories won't list them either. I tried submitting to twans and a couple but never got listed with them.

IMO directories are a waste of time. You don't need them.

got some of my blogs blocked due to "affiliate advertising" that is prohibited (even if I found nothing about it in their Terms, Help, Faq...). Their support sucks!!!

other than that the platform is good

Just make sure you're willing to lose it, that's all I'd say, don't build a house out of it.

Not directly. Use tumblr.com as a tier 3 backlink source for your link wheel. The problem is Penguin...... Randomize your anchors and you should be good.

Yeah I don't think they allow adult? I was following a few big booty blogs and they disappeared recently...

As far as their guidelines go, you can make adult Tumblr's as long as you flag them, don't spam/scrape and if you don't host adult videos on there:

"Unflagged NSFW Blogs: Tumblr is home to millions of readers and bloggers from a variety of locations, cultures, and backgrounds with different points of view concerning adult-oriented content. If you regularly post sexual or adult-oriented content, respect the choices of people in our community who would rather not see such content by flagging your blog (which you can do from the Settings page of each blog) as Not Suitable for Work ("NSFW"). This action does not prevent you and your readers from using any of Tumblr's social features, but rather allows Tumblr users who don't want to see NSFW content to avoid seeing it.

Uploading Sexually Explicit Video: You can embed anything as long as it follows the other guidelines on this page. But please don't use Tumblr's Upload Video feature to host any sexually explicit videos. We're not in the business of profiting from adult-oriented videos and hosting this stuff is fucking expensive. You can use services like xHamster to host those instead."

esham 07-28-2012 08:52 PM

My blogs was flaged nsfw. Got banned for affilate marketing. If you do this your site might last for a while but will be banned eventally.

rogueteens 07-28-2012 09:22 PM

"Got banned for affilate marketing."? Any specifics? you went banner mad? linking to galleries? what?

cheers :)

Follow B.Barnato's earlier advise, but instead of using your .com domain on tumblr, make a regular blog on that .com domain. Then on your tumblr blog link all of your pics and text links in your descriptions to your .com blog to make the sales. They don't seem to mind this as much as directly promoting right on your tumblr blog. You are just linking to an outside blog.

If you use the right tags on your tumblr posts, you will start to gain followers quickly and people re-blogging your posts. Get as many followers as you possibly can. The object is to get as many people re-blogging your posts as possible. If you get some of the bigger tumblr bloggers re-blogging your posts it brings in the traffic and adds tons of back links to your .com blog.

Google seems to love tumblr blogs lately. I am ranking higher with some of my tumblr blogs for my main keywords than I am for regular blogs that have been around for years.

looky_lou 07-28-2012 09:35 PM

A couple of other tips:

Most people on tumblr don't like watermarked pics. If your sponsor allows it, re-crop the pics without the watermark. You will increase you re-blogs and get more followers this way. Just make sure that you are using the sponsors pics to promote that sponsor.

Do your posts or queue them to post between 8:00pm - 11:00pm Eastern time in the US. This is the time that statistically has the most tumblr users online. You will have a higher chance for your posts to be seen, searched for, or re-blogged during these hours.

B.Barnato 07-28-2012 09:55 PM

I believe there is a big distinction made between link spamming sponsors in every post and using display advertising, both for mainstream and adult tumblrs.

Also not to forget, there is a nifty import tool to transfer your tumblr blog content to wordpress. I often use tumblr to jump start a domain by running it as a tumblr for a while. Gaining easy backlinks, waiting for the initial sandboxing to be over and judge the potential of the niche I am targeting.

Often if I gain a top placement with that I'll keep it on tumblr, if I need to broaden the approach I'll transfer it to wordpress. Done it plenty of times without a hitch.

also lost some tumblrs due to links (one of them with over 5k followers and >10 vistors/day...)

RayBonga 07-29-2012 06:12 AM

additionally I would create a new account per blog (pan in the ass I know) but once they delete a blog you lose access to the whole account, even to the blogs without any advertising...

I concur, would love to buy such a tool too!

DVTimes 07-30-2012 06:32 AM

i like the format of tumblr.

i have seen adult pics on there BUT i have a feeling that its not easy to convert to sales.

If you post sexy pics then its good, but its not to me the format for text or even links.

Its good for pics, and a very good way to display them. but i bet its not great format to convert people.

one thought though is that the format may be a good way to use as a members area of a paysite.

There used to be different tools of varying quality but now there is actually a plugin.

You can find it in your WP admin panel: Tools > Import

Make 100% sure your transfer worked and is fully functional before deleting your posts on tumblr.:winkwink:

Concerning tumblrs being deleted, I have my most important tumblrs backed up on wordpress installs as unpublished posts because transfers from WP > tumblr are also possible.
This however I have not tried yet.

There is probably a better way to back up your tumblrs if you are more interweb savvy, however this should do the trick for me.

B.Barnato 07-30-2012 07:50 AM

BTW, great hosting for your wordpress installs can be found in my signature.

UNLIMITED Disk Space
UNLIMITED Bandwidth
