Penguin update - My first link removal request

Well i read an interesting article about the Google penguin update - Some companies are asking people to remove links from their websites.

Some companies are even threatening legal action, if you do not remove links that point to their website.

Some speculated this might really harm the web - After all the web is made up of a "web" of links all inter linking, pointing to each other.

Imagine if it became illegal to link to someone's website? What kind of internet are we going to have?

Good bye wiki pedia, good bye facebook, shit maybe some people dont want google linking to them? Maybe they want google linking to them but not yahoo?

What crazy world is this?

I just had my first email from some company who signed up for a link trade on one of my sites - Now they are asking me to remove it.

Are we going to need permission to link to people now?

What do you guys think about this?

Tell them they are idiots.

I think people worry way to much about what Google is doing and not enough about their sites. Build your sites around content that your visitors will love and don't be paranoid about Google's updates...you'll drive yourself crazy.

Anyways sucks to hear you got a link removal request :( did they say why? like was your site's content not related or something?

I can tell ya i wont be sitting here spending 10 hours a day taking links down for people, i can assure you of that.

Freaky_Akula 08-01-2012 03:46 AM

They should work on getting more links, not less.

I'm not going to tell them that, but I'm thinking it. Have had a couple of requests lately from people who say that Google have emailed them about their linking practices; they're obviously panicking and trying to get rid of links from non relevant sites. Funny thing is that I give them a free link, it's a profile site, so it is a genuine natural link, done without request or obligation.

My bank's ToS mentions you're not permitted to deep link into their site without permission. LOL.

Over here, some company actually took a site owner to court over deep links a few years back. They lost and the site owner got some free media attention :)

G probably already has a fair amount of "exit" and "I am under 18" anchor text on links...

MrCain 08-01-2012 04:31 AM

Laugh and ignore.

Just about every paysite entry/warning page on the planet links to google as the "no thanks, I don't want to see pr0n or I am under 18" option.

kazbalah 08-01-2012 08:35 AM

I just had a great business idea, free for anyone to use.

Dont sell links - Sell the removal of links :P

Ill charge 50 bucks per link removed haha..

nico-t 08-01-2012 09:05 AM

i dont ask to remove, i did request to change anchor text to a handful of sites which have 1000's of pages linking to me with only my primary keyword. They changed it up so lets see what happend with the results. The site did went from page 80 to 76, big money! :1orglaugh

Already companies offering link removal services, saw an ad on the war forums for one, job security there, just go to fiverr and get 1000 crappy links to someones site for 5 bucks and then hit them up to remove them for 50 bucks lol

halfpint 08-01-2012 10:42 AM

Yep I had a guy who purchased a link from me asking me to remove it and saying he is removing all links to his sites

Then the site is probably a "bad neighborhood" and that does give those sites listed on it a penalty.

People need to learn that there are no shortcuts to SEO success and joining link dump sites like that will only hurt you in the long run.

papill0n 08-01-2012 11:18 AM

yeah you should remove their link and use .xxx domains only

2intense 08-01-2012 12:26 PM

Those people are funny. Google basically admitted defeat when they sent out those "suspicious link" notices, yet so many people keep falling for Google's BS.

V_RocKs 08-01-2012 01:33 PM

I think people are funny too
