Porn sales up 130% in the uk

Im watching a doc on 50 shades of grey in the uk.

They say sales of erotica are up 130% since the launch of the novel. Our largest sex store also reports sales In some stores increasing 8 fold on paddles, clamps, restraints etc

What can we learn for these people more than happy to pay for porn?

Karupted Charles 08-01-2012 03:02 PM

They are not paying for porn they are paying for toys.

Did you miss the part of my post where I said sales of erotic books was up 130%?

u-Bob 08-01-2012 03:05 PM

Maybe there's hope for magazines. Paul will be so happy.

Rochard 08-01-2012 03:33 PM

Sales are up 130% in the UK because of all of the tourists there for the Olympics.

Relentless 08-01-2012 03:34 PM

I bet when Brits put their 'not ready for prime time' girlfriends in those clamps and stammer as they speak, while clumsily trying to evoke erotic feelings through poor attempts at roleplay, their disappointment and self-loathing level will go up 2,638% ;)

This is a french geek stuff (in french sorry)
I wonder if you can reuse it for SM stuff:

Those books are like cocaine to chicks. My wife read all three in a week and wanted more.

Just what they want to bring back through customs.

The huge sales of porn were always in the shops. Something online people never could get. Imagine what they were before people could buy 30-300 scenes for $30.

Sophie Delancey 08-02-2012 07:36 AM

We just need a huge deal game changer like 50 Shades of Grey, but porn (and ideally different subject matter) to make a one-off hit in the mainstream, then we will get people through the door to talking openly about erotic sites and DVDs.

No, the increase was in very specific erotica akin to 50 shades. (Story of O etc)

Also, sales of Tallis have skyrocketed, directly because of the book

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/m...he-charts.html

Seems everyone can cash in on the book's success apart from porn sites...

Wonder if Kink or Wasteland have done SEO for 50 shades and presenting landing pages tailored for that audience...

BlackCrayon 08-02-2012 07:56 AM

pretty funny how a dumb poorly written book can "inspire" people so much.

I'm guessing few people download porn now, they just view it online. Besides, no one at customs gives a shit about some porn on a laptop.

There's been a lot of talk about this book in the US too. Amazing that a book can still reach so many people and an entire society at once.

Indeed. I've not read it, because after reading Violet Blue's review, I thought I'm much better off sticking with the books she edits/writes!

Sounds fucking dreadful.

But, if it introduces some people to the pleasure of a nice cold leather paddle, then huzzah!

Thought they said it was physical goods, not online porn. And not sure how much International travel you do, but downloading porn seems pretty low on the list of things to do while in London.

SmutHammer 08-02-2012 08:16 AM

let me know when website memberships are up 130%

cthulhu_waves 08-02-2012 08:18 AM

Does this mean there's an opportunity for written erotica in the web?

kristin 08-02-2012 09:03 AM

Woman sales are up due to more quality porn being marketed to them and also finding the methods to advertise to them.

Women don't want to go to a tube site and see a huge animated penis telling you how to make it 6" bigger. Just isn't a huge turn on. Bukkake banners are usually another turn off.

The other thing is there has been a larger mainstream push for women and porn, more articles on Marie Claire, segments on Oprah, etc. showing not to be ashamed to purchase a dirty novel or toys for you and your partner.

They clearly could be if we could market them properly.

This is a filthy porn book and people are openly and unashamedly reading it in public, in cafes, on the train etc.

My point is that there is a take-away from this. People are more than happy to pay for porn. And when you get really good selling porn it has a knock on effect for sales of everything from butt plugs to very early classical music.

There is money. There are people. There are people that like porn. There are people happy to pay for porn.

What are they doing right that 'we' are doing wrong.

Gingerbot makes a very good point about penis pill and bukkake ads being offputting for women.

Scott McD 08-02-2012 09:23 AM

People are sheep. They have always been there, willing to pay for porn. But untill the herd moves first, they won't.

Now they have this book that "everyone" has read, others jump on the bandwagon. My girlfriend doesn't read shit, yet because all her friends on Facebook are talking about it, all of a sudden she wants in on the action. Not because she gives a shit about the book, but just doesn't want to miss out on talking about it with them.

A bit like all the adults who openly read fucking Harry Potter books in public. Books meant for kids, but as soon as they become "cool", adults everywhere seem to be in on it...
