The Arizona Republic changes access to content

The Arizona Republic soon will unveil a new subscription model, joining a rapidly growing number of news organizations that charge for access to their content on both print and digital platforms.

Starting Sept. 10, online users of azcentral.com who don't have a subscription to The Republic generally will need to pay if they want to continue reading a significant number of articles and related content on the website. Certain pages and material, including the home page, section fronts, obituaries, classified advertising and stories with a strong public-safety focus, will remain available.

Oh noz at having to pay for access to the content others have paid to create! The porn industry should try this model.

With the exception of the Wall Street Journal, I know of no success stories of news media succeeding with a pay model on the web. There is too much free competition -- advertiser supported -- people go elsewhere.

Broadcast television and radio has been advertiser supported for years. Digital delivery of news stories is not that expensive -- good luck if you can't profit delivering news with just the advertising money on the web ...

I don't see it working out well. I doubt it will be more profitable than advertising revenue.
