Facial recognition marketing stirs privacy discussion along with excitement

Red Pepper ? an advertising agency specializing in marketing technologies ? has announced that it is finalizing testing for Facedeals, a facial recognition-marketing app. Still in its preliminary stages, the software has generated criticism from those who think this technology crosses the line. For others, however, Facedeals represents the next exciting step in customizable marketing.

If you opt into this service, Facedeals cameras will recognize your face when you pass by a store. The service will simultaneously check you into that location on Facebook and offer you customized deals based upon your Facebook history, including products you "like."

Samara Andreson, business director at Red Pepper, said the company is always looking for new ways to connect seamlessly with the lives of consumers. "At Red Pepper, we explore technologies that can create relevant ways for marketing to intersect with consumers and their lives, as provide some added values," she told the Daily News.

I know people that work on Facial Recognition Systems installed all over the U.S. that has been gathering Facial data for a few years. Example: Universal Studios Theme Parks, Buy a year pass, give them your drivers licenses and a thumb print get input in the FRS for free.

But on facebook i "like" lots of porn.

And i can get it for free everywhere!

Only for marketers. For the rest of the population it's not. I can think of tons of ways this can be abused. Plus you can pretty much kiss your privacy good-bye. Sure, it's an opt-in service, for now. But give it a while and it will become pretty much mandatory, you won't be able to buy shit without having it. You know, just like every goddamn service online requires you to log in to your Facebook account...

I choose NOT to have a facebook etc... Nor do I want to 'recognised' outside in the street... Although I'm doing nothing wrong, and I know that most of the time I'm already on camera anyway, doesn't *really* bother me (that much)

But, to think my face was being 'tracked' though, is really not a future I want to be a part of... :2 cents:
