Casino sues gamblers who won $1.5m

A casino is suing a group of gamblers who won $1.5million in a game of mini-baccarat after a deck of unshuffled cards landed 41 winning hands in a row.

The Golden Nugget Atlantic City is refusing to pay the players their winnings even though they broke no rules.

It claims the game was illegal because the cards were unshuffled, despite a promise from their manufacturer that they would be pre-shuffled and ready to use.

The fiasco took place during a low-stakes version of the popular card game where players are dealt hands while trying to predict if they will beat the banker.

But when the 14 players kept seeing the same sequence of cards dealt, over and over and over again, their eyes grew wide and their bets grew bigger, growing from $10 a hand to $5,000.

They became surrounded by casino security guards and management who were convinced they had cheated but unable to prove how.

The April 30 incident was the latest instance of unshuffled cards causing big headaches for an Atlantic City casino.

In December, the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort used unshuffled mini-baccarat cards for 3 1/2 hours before realizing something was wrong.

That episode led to a $91,000 fine against the casino, which fired nine people it said were involved.

Sounds like a problem between the casino and their card supplier not the winning customers.

.

Tom_PM 08-21-2012 07:10 AM

Yeah, why aren't they suing the card supplier who promised they would be shuffled?

I believe they are suing both the players and the supplier of the cards.

Clicking the link I got:
The Golden Nugget Atlantic City claims the game was illegal because the cards were unshuffled
It is also suing card manufacturer Gemaco, Inc. who had promised the cards would be pre-shuffled and ready to use
As the same card sequences appeared, the 14 players increased their bets from $10 to $5,000
The casino believed 'a sophisticated swindling and cheating scheme' was in progress but could not prove
Three gamblers also claim the casino discriminated against them based on their Chinese heritage

Question, why aren't the cards shuffled right there at the table? If they can come from the supplier set in such a way that the casino loses 41 hands in a row then the reverse must also be true. That the cards could have the casino win 41 in a row.

I would think the gaming commission would require all cards be shuffled in front of customers both for the customers mental benefit and to keep the real crooks, casinos, from cheating.

Surely if there is even a risk mistakes like this could happen, that they would always shuffle them themselves anyway? Strange...

You can't fault the players and not pay them. Pay them and then sue the manufacturer of the cards. But after 1 or 2 hands the dealer should have realized that the cards weren't shuffled

I'm not sure if its legal/ethical etc for a casino to decide halfway through the shoe to reshuffle when things aren't going their way. Certainly the customers can't ask for a new shoe when they're losing.

I had a college professor once tell me that people who are quick to point out grammar or spelling errors and fail to answer or retort are the ones with no points of view or thoughts of their own--I would tend to agree.

You are better than this.. grow up.

It is. They can reshuffle whenever they like.

I imagine the dealer is right next to him.

At least with the dealer I can see him letting things go on after he saw the sequence continuing, because I'm sure he was being tipped nicely. However, I have no idea how the floor manager (pit boss) would not have been contacted by surveillance, went over to the table, and requested the cards be washed (heavy shuffling) at least sometime well before 41 straight wins occurred. I've seen a pit boss introduce new decks into a blackjack game well before they were due, simply because the players were on a hot streak.

This is the first I've heard of decks coming pre shuffled from the manufacturer and being thrown directly in a game. I've always seen them shuffled at the table, whether by the dealer or shuffle machine. Is this something that is only done in Baccarat?

I've never heard of this practice before. Every time i've played baccarat, the cards are shuffled at the table. Honestly, i'm sure it's all kosher, but i don't think i'd ever sit at a table with a pre-shuffled deck.

ps. your misleading sig image is misleading :winkwink:

kristin 08-21-2012 02:46 PM

How the dealer didn't notice is beyond me. I've won a large stack of chips before at Roulette, the pit boss took one look at the stack and realized it was one short. How any dealer could continue not thinking something was wrong, or a pit boss not seeing it, just baffles me.

VenusBlogger 08-21-2012 02:54 PM

Really hate CASINOS, they are the biggest SCAM business in the World...

When you lose money, everything is ok..

But when you start winning, they send you security guards to intmidate you and kick you out of CASINO, What the FUCK?

Just check the movie "21"... True Story...

bloggerz 08-21-2012 03:37 PM

Just wow lol

V_RocKs 08-21-2012 03:46 PM

I have seen many games at casinos reshuffle decks to ensure randomization of the chute.

Other thing that struck me as odd is it mentioned 14 players, I've never seen that many sitting at a baccarat table, usually its just 6 or so max. Unless it was referring to the total number of players that played during the streak, (some left and others sat), but why would someone get up if they were winning every hand.

I've seen a casino reshuffle after EVERY HAND for a blackjack player that was a known card counter. He got tired of it and moved to a new casino, which was probably their goal.

Also, players can get up and move to a different table / casino whenever they'd like, they don't have to ask for a new shoe.
