my brother was looking at buying one, but opted for the non-retina display. something about how compared side by side, the quality of the retina display on "non retina" content is garbage.

I read a few other things about it too, IMO I would choose the non-retina display.

I have one, I wish it was slightly lighter and the power adaptor the size of the macbook air one,but that's all about it. Its an incredible laptop overall, once you get used to the higher resolution you can't go back to lower.

It's seriously amazing and well worth the money.

I completely agree and you can see the effect using the retina iPad. For example if you watch Netflix on your pad (and who doesn't) the retina display dithers the content and it looks blurry especially in landscape mode. It's simply using too many pixels to display the video.

This is why I got a Nexus 7 as it displays 720p Netflix much much better.

The retina display is awesome but to take advantage of all of those pixels requires higher resolutions images, video and content.

Shoplifter the retina displays dithers the content if you try to watch native (ie lower res) content in retina display mode. This can be fixed by adjusting the settings (click settings / Display / and try changing the resolution from "Best for display" to "Scaled" or vice-versa.

I'm probably the biggest anal bastard when it comes to dithering and improper scaling and all things resolution related and I haven't noticed anything that would stand out to be as being an issue in regards to the iPad 3. I've watched a ton of shitty non-native content on it and it's nothing but superb.
