Welland Canal goes DRY!! [pics]

Each winter the St. Lawrence Seaway Commission drains the Welland Canal that connects Lake Ontario to Lake Erie for routine maintenance.

Last winter I took advantage of the low water levels to do some landscape shots of the canal around the St. Catharines area.

Cool Pics

I'm always amazed how they build those locks. Not like you can turn the river off, until you have a way to turn the river off.

AllAboutCams 08-26-2012 05:43 PM

Thats a lot of water

dgraves 08-26-2012 08:36 PM

I'd agree - if it were HDR.

I like the HDR look for some pics. The 5D Mark III has a new HDR feature that I'm playing around with and it's pretty cool.

I use to think shots like these were the result of amazing photography until I bought Photomatix and realized how easy it is to create this look. Still very cool pics.

For me there is a fine line between good HDR and truly bad HDR. I've heard mixed reviews on the built-in 5DM3 HDR but I've yet to try it myself.

I've only experimented a little with Photomatix and 5-frame HDRs - but haven't gotten the results I'm happy with yet.

The shots above were processed with Topaz adjust and Imagenomic portraiture (saturation tweak).

I really like that look. I'm planning a trip to Colorado next month and plan on experimenting a lot with that HDR feature. I think HDR does a better job of displaying depth.

HDR is especially good for scenic photos with water - rivers, ponds, lakes (especially shallow rivers and lakes - the HDR makes the rock formations under the water more visible and gives a better sense of depth).

Years ago a businessman disappeared under suspicious circumstances after meeting a guy. Then 20 years later, during a drought, they found his car in the river. Years later, they finally found his skeleton, in a cave by accident.

Never know what you might find when the water's down.

Oddly, they just found a torso in the Niagara river just below the Falls.

"Police have not been able to determine whether the torso came from the Canadian or American side of the Niagara River"

Where she was killed? If alive when she went in the water, which country did she drown in? Man is this going to get complicated. Does sound like she was sliced and diced prewater.
Keep me posted.
