I certainly believe there is an intelligent design we are all a part of, but to believe in some guy hanging out in space condemning people to fire pits for eternity because we don't believe in some book of ridiculous fairy tales is beyond insane. People generally start believing in god (whichever god, society dictates is fashionable at the time) when they are closer to dying, for example when they get older or have experienced another sociological event. This then triggers this phenomenon
