watch out if you have domains with moniker...

So last week Monikers system tried to renew some of my domains and failed. It did work after going through the process manually though. Well today more domains failed to renew using their auto renew system. So again I tried to renew them manually and only one domain out of four renewed, the other three failed. I know it's nothing to do with my bank because I can see the funds were taken out for all the domains I tried to renew.

I sent them an email a day ago, no reply yet but hopefully this gets fixed soon.

Yeah well they just emailed me back...

"Unfortunately there was a communication error with the .INFO registry while this is not a common problem, It does occasionally happen."

Failing three times seems common to me but whatever I guess. That's what I get for buying some .info domains.

papill0n 10-01-2012 12:05 PM

sounds fucking shitty

CYF 10-01-2012 12:18 PM

It does sound really fucking shitty. I had a similar problem last night.

I haven't been happy with Moniker for a while now, and I'm transferring my domains out of there. I've got probably 12-15 left at Moniker and 6 of them are in the process of being transferred out right now.

Last night I tried to unlock a few for transfer and kept getting errors. Seems they had problems communicating with the registry for both .com and .org. I highly suspect the issue was on Moniker's end of things. Things seem to be resolved today though.

CyberHustler 10-01-2012 12:29 PM

Never had any of these problems but I just knocked on my woody...

bobby666 10-01-2012 02:08 PM

thanks for info

Freaky_Akula 10-01-2012 02:22 PM

Moniker quit being reliable in 2010.

baddog 10-01-2012 02:33 PM

If you are still using Moniker you really have no one to blame but yourself.

What company is so much better than Moniker?

Namecheap? I would use them but I think they still resell through Enom, although I haven't checked in a while.

There was also a thread here about namecheap policing websites. They claim the model looked too young but the guy who started the thread here on gfy claimed the content was legit from a major company/sponsor. Who knows for sure because any company isn't going to give out model IDs. It also makes me wonder what else they might come after you for...

GoDaddy? Yeah no thanks I'd take moniker any day over them.

Enom? No thanks, they fucked me back when registryfly also fucked me so I'd never give them a cent.

Not cool. not cool. Similar thing happened to me but with only one domain. Hosting got it fixed though...

Anybody with an answer?

Zeiss 10-02-2012 12:00 AM

I use ICN. Super duper cheap and very relilable. Have to use tranlsator, though. :1orglaugh

cordoba 10-02-2012 07:22 AM

Same thing happened to me the other week - I've lost 3 fairly premium domain names because of it.

Because I am not going to try and convince you? How many Moniker support threads do you need to see? What are you doing now that Bari is gone as far as support is concerned?

I know I am never going to convince you so why should I waste my time? You can continue going with a registrar that has one foot in the grave, I really do not care. You can believe the 1% that thinks GoDaddy is the white satan, I'll stick with the registrar I can contact 24/7/365

Again, good luck.

Somehow you always seem to think i am trolling you or something. Not sure what I did in the past to made you think that but ok.

Are you still a customer of Moniker?
I have been a customer since 2007 and I opened 3 tickets in total.
Not sure why but we have VIP support and I always get a reply from them within 24 hours.
I know Bari went to Enom but I never really spoke to her.

I admit i have been looking around given the posts here. But as a hosting company I also know that almost in all cases you see negative posts about a host it concerns a shared webhosting client who doesn't know shit of what he is doing.

But have not found anything I thought wow this is it yet. I have exceptional good pricing and I haven't found anything close yet.
Who are you using and why? I believe you are a fan of Godaddy (no offense intented) correct?

On a separate note, does anyone have experience with Dynadot? The Wikileaks issue does concern me though.

HelmutKohl 10-02-2012 08:47 AM

Dynadot is a very good registrar. The wikileaks.org domain is still registered there. Their bulk pricing is competitive. I have quite a few there.

Other alternatives since people are asking:

Name.com is good, I use their free Verisign ID Protect that works with my paypal key fob. I keep some of my semi-important domains there. They are slightly higher priced than the cheap registrars but bring me piece of mind.

Fabulous is another great one to keep your high value domains at. The "retail pricing" isn't very competitive but the pricing tier I'm personally on makes them really cheap for me. Free executive lock on domains.

Internet.bs is very good. Great pricing, simple clean interface, no issues at all.

NameSilo is an up-and-comer. Coupon code BUCKOFF to save $1 on a reg/transfer to try them out. Up front and cheap pricing.

I personally used to really like Moniker in the past, but the support has gone downhill, they've had issues with whoisguard failing and showing info, and lately I've had problems where I couldn't manage my domains because they couldn't communicate with the registry. I'm moving domains out of Moniker. I have maybe 8 left to move out.

Cool, thanks for the info.

Where do you keep your super-important domains? Fabulous?

With Moniker I had Portfolio Maxlock and Domain Maxlock on domains, plus the usual 10-year renewal in advance, always funds in my accounts with CC auto billing setup etc etc.

CyberHustler 10-02-2012 12:19 PM

I could barely get a hold of Bari even when she was there. But their phone support always rocks.

Klen 10-02-2012 12:21 PM

I am currently on name.com 99%,still having one domain on moniker which was renewed for 10 years so no point to bother with renewal.
Com domain on name.com cost me 9.25$ atm.

cashcows 10-02-2012 07:10 PM

Moniker will steal your domains out of "Redemption Period" out of order not according to date. I used to have 4000 domain names and I'd often keep them close to the end of redemption. Never had this happen before with any one else.

I also had them put the domains back into my account several times after I pointed it out. The last time they said they would and did not. I'm moving from them as soon as a I can.

They also renew about 2 weeks before renewal.

Yup, I keep them at Fabulous. They have a registry lock and a maxlock-type deal but it's free to use.

suesheboy 10-02-2012 08:06 PM

That 2 weeks early renewal sucks.

Thier interface sucks.

Transerfering IN a domain without being in the Whois is impossible (retarded)

They screwed affiliates the way the shut down the program and payment took at least 4 months.

Autorenew fails too often.

suesheboy 10-02-2012 08:07 PM

I forgot to mention thousands of dollars in mystery charges and credits back with 48 hours...

Do they work with account reps? I know some registrars have a transfer option where they do the entire process for you and get you better pricing :thumbsup

PornMD 10-02-2012 08:30 PM

Fabulous is pretty good. Not as good as they used to be, but have never had any serious issues with them.

I use GoDaddy and my WWD reseller ComEtc a lot for pricing sake and honestly still like them the best. People go on about elephant this, SOPA that, etc., but their support is the best I have dealt with at any registrar.

Moniker I've tended to be less than impressed with. They started outsourcing their support some time ago and once I got someone completely inept and gave up after a while.

TrashyGirl 10-03-2012 01:16 AM

I have just a few domains left at Moniker and am moving them to one of the other registrars I use.

name.com namecheap.com godaddy.com or dynadot.com

Here is the fresh SNAFU I encountered at Moniker

Even though domains go through a redemption period and then a deletion period, technically after a domain passes it's expiration date, it no longer belongs to you. I know what you mean though, that it is nice to at least have a backup plan, if something goes wrong with renewing so that you can recover your domain from the redemption period. Do they charge extra to renew your domain after it goes into redemption?

TrustedJ 01-03-2013 08:25 PM

We use namecheap. Never had a problem with them.

kane 01-03-2013 10:27 PM

I have very limited experience with them, but it isn't good. I registered one domain with them a long time ago. Not too long ago it expired. I didn't realize it had. When I realized it had expired I was unable to renew/reactivate it. I contact them and they basically told me since it had expired they would hold it and I had to pay them $125 to reactivate it.

I had nothing on the domain so I didn't do it, but it kind of sucks that they immediately hit you with that kind fee if a domain expires.

LAJ 01-03-2013 10:29 PM

I had issues with Moniker recently. Will most likely be transferring domains away from them in the near future.

Wanting some domains to lapse and getting my card dinged an extra time without my approval. Took a half dozen phone calls to get something so miniscule fixed. And I don't think the situation even got fixed so I gave up.

moniker gives you 30 days to renew at the normal rate, so your domain must of been past that.
