Soccer is not an American word. It originates in English public schools, like "rugger" for rugby. Only recently has the word soccer become associated with the US.

Italians call it calcio, by the way.

Alternatively they call it football as well, so not the same thing.

Maybe if they marketed the sport as a kind of grass based, track & field endurance test or something... then maybe I could tolerate it.
