Are they there 24/7

RKLover 10-29-2012 09:31 PM

You can't even see the real heroes in this photo.

Daytime Guard Duty in a September rain is easy. Night Duty in an Afghan fire base in the chill of February is a real bear.

Only 7% of the U.S. population has served, and qualifies to be called a "Veteran".

eroticsexxx 10-29-2012 09:33 PM

They are there to stop whatever is inside of there from getting too far if it escapes. :helpme

Since 1948

and yes I'd stand there in the cold for my fallen brothers :thumbsup

Dont generalize me in that pile :2 cents:

The job is a privilege.

The Honor Guard is relentless in their training and slackers don't make the grade.

lucas131 10-29-2012 10:22 PM

not so safe i would say ... :2 cents:

grumpy 10-30-2012 03:57 AM

are they afraid someone will take that?

V_RocKs 10-30-2012 04:21 AM

America should go the way of mandatory enlistment. When I speak with young people (25 to 30) from countries that have it they are so much more focused and dependable than the average American kid of the same age.

DWB 10-30-2012 04:40 AM

That is loyalty, no doubt about it.

Besides practicing standing still all day, how do you train for that?

I think that has more to do with bad parenting. Parents of the 80s were lazy, mine never did anything to discipline me. Thankfully I turned out ok but I can't say the same for a lot of my old friends. It's only getting worse, kids run the show now and everyone is special or has a condition :1orglaugh

These guys have professional sickness - and it's not because of the rain or wind, or bore.
It's because of the constant stand position - staying tall, tight - and they got problems with their backs - spine, pelvic bones and other problems concerning the same static stand.
It comes with years.

seeandsee 10-30-2012 06:22 AM

I'l never understand why it's important they stand there all the time

EddyTheDog 10-30-2012 06:36 AM

We have a similar thing with the Queens guards - In theory you can do pretty much do anything to them and they can not react in any way (not even smile) unless the Queen is threatened.

Rochard 10-30-2012 07:21 AM

Been there, done that!

Vendzilla 10-30-2012 07:37 AM

It's a privilege to do what they are doing, it's not an easy job. It's a tradition. I think the military should always be rich in tradition.

Brujah 10-30-2012 07:46 AM

Notice they don't have to just stand there in that position the whole time? In case it wasn't apparent.

Love the story about the guards, but it sucks that it has to be tainted by the ignorant commenters. It must've been linked from DrudgeReport. They're notorious for such hate-filled comments. It's impossible for them to just respect the spirit of the article.

Good read regarding the Honor Guards. One of my good friends was in the Honor Guards and he said it SOUNDS easy until you are scrutinized for everything.

Respect for fallen brothers... Soldiers who gave their lives, so we can live the life we live.

I couldn't have done it, being in the Navy was one thing, but on a sub, we didn't even salute officers very much.

CIVMatt 10-30-2012 08:56 AM

That picture is from a rain storm months ago and not from this storm according to that Army detachment.
