is 'cheers' the best tv shows ever?

I am just watching the shows from the start again and I find it better than ever.

Its just so sharp, but also its like a play too.

I can watch it over and over.

I am not sure there has ever been such a good show.

Though fraiser the spin off was close.

Mr Pheer 11-06-2012 07:37 AM

No, not even close.

96ukssob 11-06-2012 07:37 AM

Seinfield was ok, but not great.

mabe its becase cheers is boston based/themed. and boston is sort of old and more like england. and so mabe chers works very well to us in the uk.

czarina 11-06-2012 07:52 AM

at least it's the best signature... that's how I sign my emails "cheers!" :)

mospunk 11-06-2012 08:00 AM

Chosen 11-06-2012 08:02 AM

Never watched so I don't know...

Rochard 11-06-2012 08:06 AM

We recently discovered Big Bang Theory. Funny as all hell!

DVTimes 11-06-2012 08:07 AM

i agree its got a great theme tune.

but i think the best theme tune is chips.

though the fall guy is very good.

also the litelest hobo.

and the sadest ever is the incredible hulk.

Tom_PM 11-06-2012 08:19 AM

I never cared fro Cheers the first time it was on. Just like I don't care for big bang theory. It's one laugh track after another. 'Hello" HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA~! really?

it was filmed in front of a live studio audience.. as it states in EVERY EPISODE at the beginning.

how does that make it more or less entertaining anyway?

All in the Family and MASH are definitely two of the best shows ever.

HammerALL 11-06-2012 08:46 AM

I've always loved Cheers - it was a great show - and you get more out of it each time you watch it.

Yes, I totally agree, all that laughter makes all those shows much less funnier.

they can turn it off.

in the uk they often transmit without that laughter track.

Well then I should have just been more clear.
I never cared for Cheers originally because it just never clicked with me.

As for big bang theory, it fails with me because it is one canned laugh track after another. And the reason it makes a difference for me is because when someone in the production thinks something is funny, they lean on the button. If I'm sitting at home getting to their punchline ahead of their fake laugh and thinking it's not even funny, then it's just a total fail.

The premise and sets on big bang theory I think is smart, but the jokes are just not funny to me. It's totally predictable and formulaic and I guess there's something to the whole "target demographic" thing and I'm not in it.

Fuck no. It was good for a few laughs but come on.

BBT was like 'Friends' - It took a while, but once I got it I enjoyed it a lot....

brassmonkey 11-06-2012 10:02 AM

to say the best ever limits your choice just say it was a good series. me sanford and son, the jeffersons, all in the family , in the heat of the night, a different world, cosby show, different strokes i could go on the dukes of hazzard, the hulk, a-team, Quantum Leap :2 cents: :) see what i mean?

LatinCams 11-06-2012 11:30 AM

I wish I could watch somewhere "I Love Lucy" she cracked me up as a kid :)

Antonio 11-06-2012 11:54 AM

It was great 100 years or so ago; since then, so many awesome shows came out that it would take me forever to list them, but "the wire" and "breaking bad" would probably top that list. From the shows that are on right now, "Homeland" is the one that I follow religiously....

Is it me or have the movies totally gone to shit while the tv shows are getting better and better?

some of them are just remakes of British shows.

the kinds of shows you mention can't be compared with sitcom shows like cheers, etc. totally different. there are really no good sitcoms anymore. everyone wants either drama or reality.

seriously? i think all those shows are as about as american as humanly possible haha

In the heat of the night; a small town in Mississippi with a tiny police department who has a well educated black detective come out from Philadelphia to help them solve murders?

Yeah sounds pretty english to me ;)

ps: american version of the office is far far better! or was..

Sanford and Son is a remake of Steptoe and Son
The Jeffersons/All In the Family is based on Till Death Us Do Part

In all fairness the US Office is very funny but it is vastly different to the UK one, chalk and cheese and on the whole i prefer the original.

Ah yes, the old 'more views = better product' argument.

By that measure, McDonalds makes the best burgers in the world.

Actually up until a few years back you would have been wrong, we used to only have four channels and it wasn't unusual for a good comedy to get 20 million viewers. thats all changed now though obviously.

Jim_Gunn 11-07-2012 01:10 PM

I liked Cheers a lot back in the day and watched every episode of the whole series. But I couldn't go back and re-watch it again now. There is just too much else new to enjoy when I do want to wtch tv.

kronic 11-07-2012 04:48 PM

"All 4 cheeks and a couple of chins."

+1 for Curb your Enthusiasm. Larry David is the master of awkward comedy.

I had seen the odd episode on planes over the years and always enjoyed them so when I saw an 8 series dvd box collection, I snapped it up and finished it in less than a week.

Cant believe nobody mentioned The Honeymooners. Now that show was funny.

I just wish that one time Ralph would follow through with his bluff and knock alice to the moon.

JerseyPuma 11-08-2012 01:02 PM

i would say that cheers is probably the best network sitcom of all time in the US. sustained excellence for many many years.

i feel like TV has reached such a high water mark the past few years in terms of dramas though. to have shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Boardwalk Empire all on at the same time is fucking AWESOME.
