Suggest a Good Companion Dog?
 

After the loss of my cat, I am thinking of getting a new best friend.

When I was in the States, I had a Boston, which was wonderful, however its not a breed thats easily available in the UK

I live in a reasonable sized house, with a decent sized garden (or yard as they say in the US) and I'm happy to give it at least two half hours walks a day.

I dont need a guard dog, or a very big dog, and I am just looking for a pal really - So, considering I liked Bostons, what breed would you recommend I look into?

Thing is, that the people I see out and about with Jack Russels always seem to have 2 of them. I've often wondered if this was because they dont like being 'alone' and need another one to be 'balanced' ?

I don't think so - They like company, but they are not fussy about who or what it is.

You couldn't leave them and go to work for 8 hours a day that's for sure.

They are also great for 'single' guys because you can have a small dog without looking totally gay.

I had to look up that on google images - But its one I have seen. My elderly neighbours son has one, and I see it from time to time - Good call :)

My fav dog is the Vizsla, they look so regal, very friendly, are always at your side and love to go outside. Quite fast, low maintenance, very little dog smell...

Labs are great. Extremely intelligent, loyal, loving, but can also be a handful especially while they're growing up. Almost too loyal at times, as I can't usually get up to take a piss without him coming along to see what I'm up to.

Basset Hounds and Beagles are great companion animals.

Maltese X Shitsu is a great combination though, fiercely protective, great companions.

You might just try hitting a local shelter (or whatever the UK equivalent is) and getting a rescue dog. Some of the best dogs I have ever owned are mutts.

If you decide on particular breed you might look to see if there is a rescue for that breed in your area. Not too long ago a friend of mine got a Pit Bull from a rescue. She is the sweetest dog in the world and their family is so happy with her.

If their WERE a Boston Terrier Breeder nearby, I'd go and choose one next week...
If there WERE a Rescue Center nearby, (With A Boston Terrier) I'd go TODAY...

But as for mutts, I did rescue a HUGE (MUTT) LAB (Called "Nobby" - I Shit you not) in about 1992...

Dog was utterly crazy, kept running away, and when I took it for a walk on the beach, it would slip its leash, and run off...

If you can visualise me running along a beach, yelling "Nobby ! Nobby!" infront of families with small children etc, you can understand why he had to be returned :(

If you dont want problems, get a puppy or under 1 year old, the pound's probably got loads, or wait till just after christmas, they'll have them then.

All the dog shelters here are full of Staffordshire Bull Terriers that have been kicked around :disgust There also don't seem to be any genuine mixed dogs available just proper breeds with all their inbred problems.

+1 for shelter dogs.

get 1 from the shelter.... they will be much better companions than any purebred you can buy

My daughter has a mixed breed pekinese shih tzu.

We call it a Picha Shit ;p

We have 2 border collie-sheltie mix who are the brightest, friendliest dogs I have ever had. They take a lot of attention because they are very smart but make great companions.

I also tell folks to get 2 dogs, especially if they are getting puppies. It is as easy to train two as it is to train one and they keep each other company if you end up busy at the moment they are wanting to play :thumbsup

I have a Lab, and think they're the best breed -- but if you want the best small breed, then go with a Dachshund.

Which is why they are all ending up in rescue centres after having thick as shit drug dealers buy them because they think they will be aggressive but then find they just lick people to death.

puggles look cool but i have no idea what they are like.

One of the absolutely gentlest, nicest breed of dogs I have encountered are Greyhounds from a greyhound rescue. Friends of ours have them and they're just so amazingly friendly. Probably a bit too big for what you are seeking, as these dogs do love to run. But throw I would throw it out there.

One of the most loyal breeds I have encountered are Golden Labs. Again, maybe a little too big, but it might be difficult to find a dog more loyal or attached to you.

Like others have suggested, I would checkout shelters and rescues in your area. And as has already been mentioned, a lot of puppies are given for Christmas gifts and then basically abandoned or end up in shelters/rescues. If you can't find one now, chances are you will in the days and weeks following Christmas.

Personally, we have a couple of Siamese Cats (Seal Point and Lynx Point) and they can be quite entertaining :)

I think as companion theres nothing better like a BullDog !!!

My dog is big enough to have fun yet stays out of the way most of the time. She loves running with me, going in the back of my truck anywhere I go, and follows me around the house. Great pet.

We had 2 retired greyhounds when I was a kid, they are great dogs, dont bark, both were good with cats and both of them lazy as fuck, you had to drag them round the park, they wanted to plot up by the fire, or in the summer sleep in the garden.

The only type of dog I would have is a border collie. Smartest, friendliest and most gentle dogs there are.

I recently went to a few shelters looking for a second dog and was heartbroken at the amount of asswipes that simply abandon their dog because they were to old. Lots of 10 year + dogs that no one will ever adopt. People fucking suck.

How about taking a trip to the local dog pound and see if you can find one you like.
You may find your new buddy their.

I own a Labrador and it's a great dog but they love attention.

^^^I'm saying. Every cat I've adopted I picked out from the shelter online or found myself as a stray. I cannot bear going into the general 'cat' room at animal shelters anymore. I used to volunteer in one, and now they just remind me of how cruel peple can be. I've always chosen older/special needs cats cuz they're less adopable in general

the only dog I ever had was a Black lab and she was awesome, but every dog is:) @CurrentlySober, I know you had one difficult experience with a shelter dog, but maybe think about trying again? Every dog is different, and there's a huge chance your past experience won't be the case this time around

Either way, I'm so sorry you lost your cat...I remember you posting about it the day you made that vet visit. I'm glad you've decided to open your home to a new furry one.

That's a common misconception...they are used to being crated/penned all day and really don't require that much exercise.
