PC Strategy games - what's the latest/greatest?
I've been playing Age of Empires 3 and still love it! Command and Conquer is another favourite of mine, gone through the whole lot up to Yuri's revenge.
Any suggestions for any similar and perhaps newer games in this genre? I've nearly finished AOE 3 and like playing skirmishes still, but looking for something new if possible. |
Well i like AOE3 too but it's not really a replayable game once you finish campaign and try all skirmish levels. At the moment i still play redalert 3 and it's mode challenge, where i try to accomplish better time on it.

You can try out the new Xcom Enemy Unknown (remake/reimagination of the original one) from firaxis (civ series).
Or just buy this badass for 5.99$ http://www.gog.com/gamecard/sid_meiers_colonization :D |
i keep meaning to try out aoe but never get around to it.

I might get Red Alert 3 and Command and Conquer 4 because I haven't got them, just checked. I got the first decade box set only goes up to Generals. Any good places to download demos these days? I want to try a couple of the Civilization games out and see what they're like. |
i still play Rise Of The Nations (2003)... i think its 10 times better than any of Command and Conquer release...

total war

I'm a huge AOE3 fan, and C&C:Generals, too. And the original SimCity games. There just doesn't seem to be out much in this vein lately. I tried "Modern War" on my iPad and was heavily disappointed. blah. I'll have to look at the firaxis one linked above.

Yeah you're right though not much new out these days, there used to be a good new strategy game like every month, haven't seen hardly any around the past few years :( Going to try Civilization out and find some of the missing Command & Conquers I think. Oh and Black and White used to be good, so might look for number 2 (not rhyming slang). |
Always loved Company of Heroes.
I think number 2 is out soon. |
also 2 more great ones from 2000s
World In Conflict (late 80s USSR - USA war scenario) and yes, Company of Heroes (WW2 allies campaign) |
|
On a console the best turn based game ever is Civilizations Revolutions.

Civilization V gods and kings is awesome game,i would even say too awesome , because let say if you start to play in Monday you could spend entire week doing nothing else then just playing it since one game average duration is close to one week.

Picked up this space trading and combat simulator, X3: Terran Conflict, which has a lot of strategy and depth. It started to feel like a bit like work after a while but was pretty cool and very complex, nice old school style game with some newer graphics and stuff. Basically build a giant space empire, almost more like sim city.

Current shortlist is:
Civ 5 and perhaps 4 or another more recent Civ game. Command and Conquer 3 Red alert 3 Command and Conquer 4 I didn't know I was missing so many! Thanks guys for helping me find something new :thumbsup Got to check out some of the more recent suggestions. I don't really want games from early 2000's though because chances are I looked at them back then and put them down but I'll make sure first :thumbsup |
a lot of people say that CIV 4 is better than CIV 5.

I wish I could find my Total Annihilation CD |
the old syndicate is the best

I know my questions is moving away from the traditional war strategy games SI was referring to but anyone can recommend a Final Fantasty Tactics/Vandal Hearts 1/2 type strategy game that's turned based?
|
slight off topic, but does anyone remember the old game on the Amiga that was a semi-humorous but very addictive strategy game about Nuclear Cold war, that had cartoonish type characters for the world leaders with different personalities, like Gandhi, and Gorbachev, and Ronald Reagan, and Thatcher, etc.?
that was such a fun game, and simple and quick enough to play in an hour or so, with lots of replayability, someone should do a remake for PC (if they haven't already) I forget the name of it though, anyone?? I'd love to play it again and see if it holds up decades later |

Starcraft2 is by far the best real time PVP strategy game
|
Empire earth, the orginal one, epic game!
Many hours of my youth lost playing that |
I'm having fun with crimecraft

Coh company of heroes is the pinnacle. I've played them all.
Set in ww2, authentic units, 3rd person, focus on gameplay and tactics. Not base building. |
now you make me wanna blow the dust off AOE3 and start playing it again, sure is a kewl game

great topic, post more new RTS games here please
|
Another vote for Starcraft, either 1 or 2 actually.
An older one to look out for, The Close Combat series, realtime strat, ww2/realistic setting, tight focus on tactics, no real base building/resource harvesting/research. 4 or 5 games in the series, all reasonably worth playing. First of the series was released by Microsoft of all people, but GREAT set of games. Heavily influenced by Advanced Squad Leader from Avalon Hill (for those that are real geeks and also used to play table top wargames). Lets not forget another of Sid Meier's classics, Alpha Centauri (Civ in space!) There is also a great series of nearly realtime strategy (it takes a bit of getting used to but the realism rocks!) from an indie publisher called Combat Mission which has a few titles in the series now, fantastic series, check battlefront (dot) com. This game series is very realistic. First series or second series are both great buys, albeit fairly expensive. As always, any of these games are only really worth playing against a human. |
I have no idea what's new out there in this area but I had really liked Dark Reign back in the day for an RTS game and Master of Orion 1 for a turn based.
|
Have you seen End Of Nations from the same company that did Rift? It looks like it is going to be a big winner!
