Whats the best video format for Members areas?
 

Setting up a members area for a client and havent done one in a while

Everyone likes what they are used to, but mp4 is an excellent format that will play on anything. We offer mp4 for stream and download, and a wmv download. Everyone is happy.

.wmv i think more common for players

BTW... the best mp4 encoder I've found, though it can be a little slow, is Handbrake. Boggles the mind why this is free. Media Coder is also free (and fast - uses CUDA) and good but I can get better quality from Handbrake. Sorenson Squeeze is what I use for WMV. Not cheap, but it's great if you encode to WMV. But you don't need Squeeze if you're just starting out on a budget, but Handbrake is a must.

does .mp4 work without any codecs etc on windows? (don't want to uninstall everything to test it)

mp4 is a container it works with other codecs but H.264 is the most common and the most widely used.

if you have wmp 10 or 11 it should play h.264 in mp4 just fine if you use the baseline or main profiles

if you use hi profile you will need an h.264 enabled graphics card plus ios wont play higgh profile

iOS plays them fine. Mike means a certain type of way of encoding it (High Profile) can cause problems.
