The only good thing is that some good old plugins are still compatible with new versions.

I've not used it, nor have we decided to upgrade yet (we do compatibility testing before deploying upgrades).

What exactly is different about it? Doesn't it still let you browse and select files to insert as a post's gallery? Or have they changed that with this release?

All the properly-made plugins should work with that and all next new versions.Use only official API and you'll be fine.

Most of my own plugins work even with 2.xx and earlier versions :)
