Anti Gunners, Read It And Weep! "Poll: Majority of Americans view the NRA favorably"

"Poll: Majority of Americans view the NRA favorably"

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-34222_16...nra-favorably/

"The president said he supports a ban on assault weapons. Getting it though Congress quickly, however, is unlikely, and the mere mention of the ban is enough to send people running to the stores to buy guns before they become illegal. Chip Reid reports.

A new poll conducted after the mass shooting that killed 20 children and seven adults in Newtown, Conn., found that a majority of Americans have a favorable view of the National Rifle Association.

In a Gallup survey of 1,038 randomly selected adults, 54 percent said they have a "very favorable" or "mostly favorable" opinion of the powerful gun lobby. The NRA's support is down from its peak in 2005 - the last time Gallup asked the question - when 60 percent of respondents said they had positive views of the organization. The NRA's low point among public perception occurred in 1995 when only 42 percent of respondents said they viewed the organization favorably.

The NRA has become the target among critics of gun ownership with its absolutist views on guns, including assault weapons. A week after the Newtown massacre, Wayne LaPierre, the CEO of the NRA, held a news conference where he proposed a solution to school shootings, calling for "armed police officers in every single school in this nation." LaPierre's highly-publicized remarks happened at the midpoint of the poll, which was conducted from December 19-22.

Not surprisingly, respondents who keep guns in their homes had a more favorable view of the NRA than respondents who do not own guns. Seventy-five percent of gun owners view the organization in a positive light compared to 40 percent non-gun owners who do.

Also unsurprisingly, 83 percent of Republicans, who tend to prefer less gun control, backed the NRA while only 36 percent of Democrats had a favorable view. The poll has a +/- 4 percent margin of error."

what about the percentage of people who don't label themselves as republican or democrat? Sounds like a worthless survey to me... chocked full of loaded questions.

Chicago murder rate sets new record

A Thursday evening shooting in the west side of Chicago marked a milestone for the Windy City: for the first time since 2008, the city can likely claim 500 homicides in a single year.

With still a few days to go until the new year, 40-year-old Nathaniel T. Jackson became the five-hundredth person killed in Chicago, Illinois since the start of 2012.

In 2011, the city saw only 435 homicides.

Superintendent Garry McCarthy confirmed to the Chicago Tribune late Thursday night that the passing of Mr. Jackson marked murder number 500 for the Windy City, and that no suspect had been identified by the police at that point. On Friday afternoon, though, the department issued a statement to the press reclassifying a death earlier in the week as being still under investigation. With that update, the slaying of Jackson makes him one murder shy of the 500 mark, but with a homicide rate of more than one per day, that milestone is expected to be met before 2012 comes to a close.

Discussing the grim news on Friday, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said it was “an unfortunate and tragic milestone, which not only marks a needless loss of life but serves as a reminder of the damage that illegal guns and conflicts between gangs cause in our neighborhoods.”

Emanuel, a former Obama administration staffer known like the president for his staunch pro-gun control stance, condemned the National Rifle Association earlier this month after the NRA’s vice president asked for armed guards in every school across America.

"That is not the right answer for our society, our schools and most importantly our children,” Emanuel said.

I'm going to refrain from commenting until all the non-American GFYers speak their mind, as what they have to say is very important and relevant to American gun law.

I'm not sure why so many in other countries have so much to say about a problem that Americans themselves have to live with and deal with.

Yet Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. Clearly the answer is to pass more gun control laws.

And now for the rest of the story!

http://caffeinatedthoughts.com/2012/...cides-in-2012/

"Tough Gun Control Laws In Action: Chicago Hits 500 Homicides in 2012"

"Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn will I?m sure will try to defend the strict gun control measures that have been in place that were recently found unconstitutional by a federal judge. It?s a wasted defense. The verdict has been reached in the arena of simple facts, their gun control measures have been a failure.

WGN in Chicago reports that Chicago has reached 500 homicides for 2012. 500!

Chicago has hit a dismal milestone. A late night shooting has marked the city?s 500th homicide for the year.

40-year-old Nathaniel Jackson was shot on the city?s West Side around 9 p.m Thursday. He was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. The victim?s family has confirmed his identity.

Chicago Police say Jackson was shot in the head while standing outside a convenience store at Augusta Boulevard and Lavergne Avenue in the Austin Neighborhood.

One relative told WGN that Jackson had recently been released from jail and was living with a friend on the West Side.

Circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear. No arrests have been made.

What?s sad is that it isn?t the first time Chicago has reached the 500 mark. They also hit 500 in 2008.

Gun control does not prevent gun crime ? period. It would be far more productive to address the root causes of violence than the instruments that some use. The news out of Chicago should discourage tougher (and unconstitutional) gun control laws, but I?m sure that will fall on deaf ears with Feinstien and company."

Also, the NRA is the most powerful lobby/special interest group in the nation second only to the ACLU, who's also pro-second amendment. Now Glen you won't agree with this obviously, but the way you post and the type of your posts, I'd bet heavily if you were American, you'd own a firearm.

Even factoring in that guns laws are less tight in surrounding states, you still might expect the strict Illinois, and even stricter Chicago laws, to at least put a damper on the murder rate there. Yet it hit a high.

Two wrongs don't make a right, and I don't agree with U.S. govt interference in other countries either. That said, when was the last time you saw an American webmaster start a thread here moaning about some European or Canadian law he doesn't like? :1orglaugh

So 1,038 people represent the population?

Where were the people? Was it a selection of people from the one city / state? Or was it across multiple states? Were they east / west coast? Northern and Southern states? Race / gender / demographics blah de blah blah - that poll is worthless.

There was a university professor in Western Australia who labeled all Australians as racist on Australia Day because she polled 100 or so people at an Australia Day celebration in WA in 2012. This was then spewed all over the news and the idiots did not even take one second to actually look at how the stats were collected.

Adding 'random' does not automatically make the poll accurate. :2 cents:

TheSquealer 12-28-2012 05:51 PM

I don't personally care for the NRA and could care less if gun ownership is outlawed. However, i do believe that as an organization protecting peoples "rights", the only thing they do right is that they don't back down no matter what. No compromise. All or nothing.

CyberHustler 12-28-2012 06:13 PM

The Mexican Cartels have recently turned Chicago into an American gun & drug wholesale hub... and Chicago already had a deep very gang culture to start with. Recipe for disaster.

This year they seized more guns on Chicago streets than NYC and LA combined: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18563_16...s-of-stopping/

What's happening there and in other cities like Detroit and Philadelphia is some extra wild shit that has nothing to do with a gun law.
