Presumed guilty, until proven innocent. #1 way to avoid issues with police? Don't ever fucking talk to the police. Few people seem to understand that.

:2 cents: With one exception, every time I have had to deal with the USA police in any capacity, they bust my balls even if I have nothing to do with the situation and am just a bystander or called them on behalf of someone else. These days when I'm in the USA I don't stop to see what is going on, I don't call them if someone or myself needs help, and generally avoid them at all costs. Don't want anything to do with them.

The Thai police are like big goofy kids in uniform so they are not a problem, but American police... fuuuuuck them. One bad experience after another.

I don't understand why people have so many issues with cops. Last time I called them (on behalf of someone else) we were standing around telling jokes when all was done. I asked why one had the nicest car of the three and they started cracking on that cop talking about what he must have done to get the new cruiser.

I hear all of these stories and wonder where these people (and cops) are.

Every profession has its good guys and bad apples. Unfortunately, the bad apples are the ones that get noticed the most. I work with cops every day and have met quite a few good ones who were just regular, down-to-earth guys. I've also worked with a few who were ego-driven dickheads who thought they were special and above everyone else.

Much of the time - it comes down to how you treat them.

It's always the same people who have problems with cops. Funny how that works.

I've gotten out of a few situations just by being friendly and cooperative. I don't understand it either.

Smile, be polite, do what they say. Does that make you a lemming? I don't know, maybe, but I know that it will keep you out of trouble more often than not. I'll go with that.
