Is Acacia backed by a church?

looking at what Acacia is doing I get the feeling it's being back by some sort of religious group specifically attacking adult sites as I havnt' heard of any attempt at any sites other than adult.

I've downloaded video from MSN before. I guess they just don't want to take on microsoft

no, they're not. they are just money hungry
they are now going after non-adult companies as well. I can't find the links now, but several mainstream companies ahve been served. They just chose to go after adult companies first, but they will be targeting everyone soon.

Doubt it. They have gone after some non adult - VirginRadio has signed a license agreement already.

And Acacia also own a patent around the vchip which they have managed to license to some of the TV manufacturers.

virgin records uk, if my memory servs correct were their first patsies

Libertine 02-19-2003 07:27 PM

Isn't Virgin one of the companies already paying them? Not exactly adult...

Besides that, their strategy is to get the small web-based businesses first, and get legal precedents and some extra money with that, which will help them when they take on the big guys (who have much deeper pockets for lawsuits and such).
And guess what the small web-based businesses using streaming media are selling?

wonder if projectmayo will be getting a nice thick packet in the mail soon..

Jay_StandAhead 02-19-2003 07:28 PM

Acacia can get all the legal precedents they want, if they go after Microsoft they'll loose.

That's just the way it works :)

The F****g same thing the old brutus tried with Tetris. I have tried to patent some parts of that old great masterpiece - I have some parts patented - but may I say - my patent is worthless. The situation is same with Acasia. They have patented the thing which was widely available / in use before they got their fucking paten(s). So, I donīt understand Virgin. They are big. Their legal dept. is lost the focus. Acasias patent claims will not be successfull if someone takes the thing seriously. And sure - someone takes.

It's been mentioned before, they're going after those they can get money from first. They think because there is so much revenue going through the adult market, they could make enough money from us to be able to eventually take on the bigger companies... this to them will be a long and drawn out battle.

If the adult internet industry let's them get away with their idiotic patents, mainstream will be next. As soon as this industry comes together in a proper fashion and develops an adult webmaster guild or collective of some kind we will always have to deal with people who think they own intellectual rights over simple protocol and obvious technologies they did not invent.

I would be more than happy to do anything I can and even donate money to an independent organization to whom we can all belong as equals, who will fight for our collective self interest.

If you have any ideas on this, and the development of such an idea, this forum is the right place to get things done. I'd be happy to help as much as I can.

Virgin have stated that they gets heaps of patent notices a year, most of which the just file in the rubbish bin - but Acacia's was one of the few they felt had merrit.

Obviously they felt it was cheaper to pay than to fight the case in court.
