Bizarre Wordpress problem!

I've downloaded and installed three new installs of the latest Wordpress and each time, the blogroll is nowhere to be seen! What could be causing this?

Fat Panda 01-23-2013 09:32 AM

what theme are you using?

rogueteens 01-23-2013 09:34 AM

thats the thing, i've tried three different themes but the blogroll doesnt even show up in the admin on a totaly fresh install with no new themes or plugins, its just gone from everywhere, outside and within the admin!!

The latest version of wordpress does not have a blogroll.... "menus". blogrolls only show if they existed on an older install.

thanks, i added a menu with the links and that worked but bloody hell! What a step backwards, there's no control over the links at all, no "open in new window", nothing!

Maybe this can fix your problem..

Step by step solution to fix blogroll issue in WordPress 3.5

(from http://www.shoutgeek.com/enable-blog...nks-wordpress/)
  • First go to wordpress admin area by your-blog-name.com/wp-login.php
  • Now On left Sidebar go to Appearance section and click on Editor which gives access to all wordpress files.
  • Edit functions.php(Theme Option File) and simply place below code anywhere in file

Code:

add_filter( 'pre_option_link_manager_enabled', '__return_true' );
Your Blogroll links now start appearing on wordpress admin area and you can use Links functionality like your previous version of wordpress.

.

It sounds like your installation has cancer, sorry.

I had the same problem, I think my problem was the actual widget wasn't named. Like Friends or Links etc.

no it doesnt, blogroll link manager was removed from UI in 3.5

You need Link manager plugin to get blogroll feature back.

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/link-manager/

Yeah, as someone with an absurd number of blogs, all managed through other software to post out, manage links etc. I was pretty confused and then pissed trying to figure out what was happening as I created 1000s on a current install and couldn't add/manage links.. You can add the code to your theme though to show the blog roll. Search "Wordpress cheat sheet" etc and find the php code for those elements. Otherwise, you can just download the version right before 3.5 from Wordpress.org and use it.

This is classic WordPress dev-team bullshit, to be honest. They get some hairbrained coder idea that "this is conceptually like a menu so the feature is redundant and we're taking it out" even though everybody uses it and relies on it and the menus don't have all the features that the links management stuff did. Stuff like this is why people dread every major upgrade release. "What kind of damage did they do to their core functionality this time?" Love WordPress, hate the dev team's contempt for users.

Yeah, it's not hard to get the feature back -- but there's no warning, no explanation, and no help for the lost and confused.

FYI, usual changes are made not based on design or aesthetics but on security. Always keep that in mind. If a feature was so bullet-riddled with security issues to the point that it was an entire security hole, it will get axed...period. That's usually the case when companies decide to axe whole features of their software. :2 cents:
