I see the humor, and agree that far too many people conflate the two, especially in the conspiracy theory crowd. However, that image is just as misleading as many of the people it pokes fun at.
The left y-axis increases less than 30% while the right y-axis increases by 300%. Leaving aside the additional issue of one being a raw value and the other being a rate, if the graph were more accurately portrayed, the line representing the US murder rate would be much more flat.
All said, this means we are doing a much better job of eliminating Internet Explorer than we are murder, so our priorities are in the right place.
