The fact that you support something like this is horrible... I don't care if you think it's good to use against the tubes or not... These extensions are meant to blacklist everything and require you to whitelist sites, and normal users won't customize it that much, they'll just install the extension and go on their merry way never seeing an advertisement again.

I notice alot of people using readability hitting my sites sometimes. I don't know if they block the ads or not.

I notice if I turn on noscript, whitelist lontailvideo.com and the site I am on. There are no pop-ups.

Just like pirated sites, We gotta learn to go with the flow. If more people start blocking pop-ups - time to switch back to selling content.

If your income in this industry is based entirely on popups and banner ads, then you're already in trouble.

The reality is, the reason why things like Ablock Plus are so incredibly popular is because of the ever-evolving, ever-intrusive nature of the advertising creatives themselves. Webmasters adding such aggressive and/or ridiculously annoying ads are, at very least in part, responsible for the rising popularity of adblockers ad blocker add-ons.

News flash: these programs block banners you put on the pages to click through to the sponsor that owns the content too...

Let's all just remove links to pay sites in favor of giving the content away for free so that people don't use adblock eh? Great solution... Way to put yourself in the same boat as the people you're trying to fight.

Of course we do. Thus the reason we think outside the box and survive after 15 years without having to rely on banner ads or popunders.

Instead of battling the end user for control of his/her surfing experience, we feel it's a better use of our time to accept that the user probably has something installed and engage them in other more creative ways.

Consider this, when was the last time you clicked a banner on this site. Then compare it to clicking a link that someone recommended in a thread. I'd be surprised, and in fact suspicious, if you clicked banners on this site more than you clicked text links in the context of a thread. You suggested your own link in this very thread for removeadblock and explained why people should click. I'll bet people clicked that link to check it out. I did. But I never clicked any banners on this site.

The reality is, there's a good deal of money left on the table by trying to combat an end users preferences and rejecting that user as a result. That user who prefers to not see ads is a user that could also buy something, just does not want the clutter of a pile of excessively intrusive ads.

For us, we prefer to focus our attention on our product and contextual presentation instead of wasting time fighting for control of the end user's browser experience. Your mileage may vary.

ETA: We do use banners, but don't lose sleep over someone blocking them. We provide a contextual experience such that the banner is a complementary element, not the primary focus. If the banner is blocked, it's not a big deal.

Funny thing... I remember seeing this type of discussion, name calling, etc. ever since the mid-90's. The affiliate forums, such as ABestWeb, were filled with proclamations of the end of the affiliate with the onset of cookie blockers, tracker erasers, history erasers, adblockers, etc. Some things never change, I guess. And yet, a lot of people still make a great living all these years later.

Adblockers has been around for more than a decade. Luckily I monetize douche-bags that has them installed via plugrush adblock redirects ;)
