BlackLabelAds / AdBrite shutting down Feb 1st

http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/28/adbrite-shut-down/

Quote:

Ad exchange adBrite told partners today that it will be shutting down on Feb. 1.

A couple of TechCrunch readers sent us copies of the emails that went out to adBrite publishers and advertisers. Here?s the advertiser version:

Dear adBrite Advertiser,

Over the last few weeks, adBrite and its management have been evaluating the go-forward plan for the business. Given market conditions and certain financial liabilities, in working with our lenders, we have decided to cease operations on Feb 1, 2013.

This is a difficult decision for all of us at adBrite. However, after much deliberation this seems to be the best course of action despite the impact it will have on all the employees, clients and partners who helped build this business. There will be a team in place as needed to assist with winding down your campaign, and final reporting and invoicing.

Thank you for being part of the adBrite community.

The adBrite Team

In an interview with AllThingsD, CEO Hardeep Bindra said he joined last year with the goal of selling the company, and was making progress on talks before they fell through ?a couple weeks ago.? AdBrite currently has 26 employees.

The company was founded in 2002 as an ad network, and became an ad exchange in 2008. It raised more than $40 million in funding from Sequoia Capital and others. (Shortly after Sequoia?s infamous ?RIP Good Times? presentation.) Co-founder Philip Kaplan has been involved in several startups since then ? currently he?s working on a social network for musicians called Fandalism.

Signs of the times. Links pulled

Markul 01-29-2013 12:38 AM

Links pulled years ago.

BIGTYMER 01-29-2013 12:45 AM

Haven't used them in years anyway.

PromoterX 01-29-2013 02:08 AM

I love how its always such a "difficult decision".

No idiots... making that decision is always easy - turning your money losing business around and making it profitable is "difficult".

Mr.Fiction 01-29-2013 02:50 AM

Fucked Company.

wehateporn 01-29-2013 02:57 AM

I knew someone who worked with this guy, apparently he was an amazing coder, but not so good with marketing. His business did well while there was no real competition :2 cents:

wehateporn 01-29-2013 03:05 AM

Anyone seen that blue and orange combo somewhere before? :upsidedow

freemarket 01-29-2013 05:22 AM

Can anybody from AdBrite tell us what will happen to unpaid earnings after the company is wound down? Will earnings that are under your threshold remain unpaid? Also, how about your 90 day hold period? Will you hold money for 90 days after the program is shut down?

Honestly, I am not surprised. Any company that needs to wait 90 days to pay earnings can't be doing very well. Nonetheless, I am sorry to see them go. Less competition among advertising networks is bad for everybody.

wehateporn 01-29-2013 05:30 AM

Maybe Juicy Ads could buy them out and have a mainstream ad network, probably not worth the risk though, Jay is sorted for life already. :2 cents:

arock10 01-29-2013 05:51 AM

Surprised they lasted this long

seeandsee 01-29-2013 05:55 AM

They were very big few years before in mainstream traffic delivery, but they fucked it all

Klen 01-29-2013 06:11 AM

They used to be synonym for adsense alternative, but nothing unusual considering there is like billions of traffic brokers now.

CaptainHowdy 01-29-2013 06:14 AM

Welcome to 2013 ...

You would be surprised how often that is the case. There are a lot of good developers, network admins, and alike who can come up with good ideas, or build you a rock solid network but can't sell it for shit. What I have found is most of these guys who are good programmers/developers/network admins are not people personas. They need a Wizzie fo Shizzie or a ying to the yang in regards to the sales and front man.

Agreed. I had not heard a lot from them in years.

CyberHustler 01-29-2013 09:31 AM

They were by far the suckiest ad network I have ever tried. Viruses, malware, non-working limits for their intermission ads, paying by check only, etc. Perfect example of what not to do.

It was discussed but we will be glad to take any clean publishers that were using them...:winkwink:

Blast From the Past:thumbsup

One of my favorite sites, back in the day

Exo-Geoffrey 01-30-2013 08:38 AM

It's sad to read this. I assume that this ad network didn't evolve fast enough. We saw that most of BLA publishers and advertisers are working now with ExoClick and ExoClickMobile. For those who haven't made the transition yet, they are more than welcome on our ad network.

Her name is Jaden Heaven. I shot her for ATK, and then a week later for another client who was bad about paying, and I never sent him the content as he owed me money. Still have solo stills and b/g stills and video (SD) of her that have never seen the light of day. It's a pity the content isn't worth anything in the current market, as she was one of the hottest girls I ever shot.

Is the state of affairs seriously that bad, that scenes with models like that will never be released?

Yes.

About 18 months ago I posted photos I'd shot of a very pretty girl, and two very active GFY posters emailed me asking about prices for content. I emailed them back asking them exactly what kind of content they wanted--obviously, solo content is going to be cheaper than b/g content, which is going to be cheaper than anal gangbang content.

I did not receive a reply from either person--and I followed up with another email to each. And these are GFY "players".

The state of affairs in the content creation business isn't as bad as it seems, it's actually worse than it seems.

Unreal, and your work is great. We've got to figure out a way to monetize at a decent margin. There is an answer.

Prasawet 02-01-2013 11:50 AM

I have good experience with them over the years, always paid by their schedule, sorry about this.
And don't be worry, they will pay last check.

I wouldn't bet on it, already hearing reports of checks being returned unpaid. :(
