Any other aquarium enthusiasts here? [pics]e

I recently got back into it for the first time since I was a wee lad and six months in I'm in full on geek mode with it. I started with the smaller tank in the first picture which is in my office at work. I decided to go with a freshwater setup for Discus which I had never kept before. I have definitely fallen in love with these fish. They are super social and very interesting to watch how they interact. It can be difficult finding the right group dynamic in a smaller tank as I've found out.

Eventually I ended up with two that paired up (the blue ones in both pics) and they got really aggressive after some live food so I ended up getting the second tank set up last weekend in my home office. I've set it up for them to breed so hopefully I'll be reporting back with some baby pics soon.

Lifetime aquarist here. Has the MTS set in yet? :winkwink:

Nice Discus u have there

I used to have a 6 foot marine tank with a sump which cost me a small fortune to set up. Had actinic lights on it which made the coral fluoresce. See if i can dig out some pics from my setup

brassmonkey 01-31-2013 04:42 PM

you going to eat them?

MaDalton 01-31-2013 04:48 PM

there's two things in the world that smell like fish - one of them is fish

EddyTheDog 01-31-2013 04:55 PM

Lose the tetras out of the breeding tank and at the same time do a scant 10% water change with a temp drop of just 1 degree centigrade.

Mute the light to about 35% but leave it on 24hrs.

Your first born belong to me....

kane 01-31-2013 05:21 PM

Years ago I had a decent tank that had some discus in it and they creeped me out. Whenever I would walk into the room they would stop what they were doing and look at me. They would just sit and stare at me.

L-Pink 01-31-2013 05:37 PM

I've always been fascinated watching fish, except for a goldfish named Bob, rip, I haven't had an aquarium since I was a kid.

I'm curious about your water temp comment considering I didn't mention the temperature of the tank. Please tell me more.

Regarding the light, I currently have no way to adjust it like that. I do plan on upgrading to an LED with a moon light function. Please let me know what light you would recommend.

NALEM 01-31-2013 08:21 PM

Sam ... Eddy was playing the Love Doctor of Fish.

Fish are programmed to breed when certain conditions set in.

Change in water temperature simulates the seasonal change for them found in their natural habitat.

See if you can add a dimmer switch to your lights.

A small change in the water itself helps remove pollutants caused by fish waste and excess food served ... and gives them the needed energy boost to help them mate.

Do some research to see if you should separate the fish from each other for a few days.
Keeping them apart can cause a greater desire for them to breed.

Good luck!

Yep - It would normally be more than 1 degree but Discus are sensitive to temp changes and generally like it on the high side.

I don't think you would need to separate Discus - But it has been a while since I had them so double check.

Shotsie 01-31-2013 10:23 PM

throw some Oscars in there with em.

ottopottomouse 02-01-2013 03:58 AM

I've only ever had outdoor fish. Something ate them all last year and had to start again

CurrentlySober 02-01-2013 04:07 AM

i kept a fish in my toilet once, but it died :(

alex.missyouth 02-01-2013 04:23 AM

I really like aquariums, just can't afford one. :)

Relentless 02-01-2013 05:26 AM

If you really want them to breed, try getting them their own account at MrScales.com
The mating scenes 43 minutes into Blue Lagoon or 7 minutes into Nemo may be what they want to see most ;)

Good luck with the tank!

matuloo 02-01-2013 05:52 AM

I got back into aquariums too, about 3 years ago. I started with a Tanganyika setup, mostly tropheus fish, recently I sold them and changed the whole setup, now I have central america cichlids in there, plus a few Oscars that are still reallty small :) My tank is about 160 gallons :)

barelist 02-01-2013 09:48 AM

Oh man... wrong thread for me...

Kept freshwater Cichlids when I was a kid, and got into Saltwater about 2 years ago.

Most expensive, time consuming and frustrating hobby ever.

Started with a 55 gallon tank, then bought a 135 and then a 240 gallon tank.

After months of setting the 240 up, I decided I needed something bigger.

Going to start working on a 400 gallon tank (122" x 30.5" x 25.5") in a few months with around a 120 gallon sump tank under the main tank for filtration.

Goal is to keep these two fish together... which need a lot of their own space or they will kill each other.

http://www.liveaquaria.com/images/ca...illes-tang.jpg

In the mean time I tore down my 55 gallon and set it up again with better lights to learn how to keep coral. Better learn the ropes on a small tank then lose tens of thousands on lost corals on a huge tank.

Here are some pics from our redone 55, added a bunch of coral since then.

I used to be. until my albino african clawed frog tried to eat another fish that had quills in its fins, and the frog suffocated and died. I dont need dead frogs and fish in my life at this point. also try and clean a tank that has a frog in it. youll be chasing him down the block i promise you

crockett 02-02-2013 04:15 PM

I always wanted to build a reef tank. I'm not so much on just seeing some pretty fish in a empty aquarium. I want a nice looking coral reef and would settle for just clown fish.. :winkwink:

Biggest reason I never made one is because it would be hard to go anywhere for any amount of time with out finding someone to take care of it.

That's a very nice setup !
How much time per week do you spend on the salt water aquarium ?

I got cichlids and oscars right now, oscars tried to breed once but it didn't work out
I got black convicts that have babies every 4-8 weeks or so..
It's fun to look at but I always thought salt water would be cooler.

This is my first aquarium, it seems to maintain itself perfectly (not even doing water changes) so I'm guessing anything will be more work than this

livexxx 02-02-2013 07:20 PM

this is a pretty decent sized office tank
about 12m x 2m x 4m I think, largest private tank in the UK

HandballJim 02-02-2013 10:47 PM

I used to breed African Cichlids, and my dad was one of the first in the Bronx to breed them and sell the babies to fish stores all over NY and NJ. I had 6 tanks in my room as a kid, and we also breed Budapest Show Pigeons in a huge coop on the back porch.

I have also had tetras, barbs, guppies, and Seahorse tanks over the years. I still love Africans the best, but way too much work to keep at this time in my life.

Honestly once its running well just 5 minutes a day feeding.

Once a week I'll clean the glass maybe 5 minutes.

Also empty the skimmer a few times a week which takes no time.

I change 10% of the water every few weeks. That takes 30 min to an hour.

Otherwise with enough live rock the tank takes care of itself.

Biggest thing I've learnt... quarantine all new fish for a few weeks before adding them to a display tank. Adding a sick fish right in can lead to months and tons of money wasted as your tank crashes.

Yanks_Todd 02-03-2013 09:22 AM

If you get breeding pics, don't forget about 2257. :thumbsup

mineistaken 02-03-2013 09:34 AM

put some tilapia in and then eat them after they gt bigger

MrMaxwell 02-03-2013 09:53 AM

I would rather get shot than try to maintain a salt tank. Unless you have people maintaining it, forget it or kill yourself. I am serious.

I had a fresh water tank, 220gal Oceanic. I loved my fish. I even had a couple of pacu - motherfuckers got to be over three feet long when I put them in the pond.. had to keep them in the indoor pond because they hated cold. They're like a piranha but with a nicer face and small teeth... the cat tried to get them when they were still inside and they'd just splash water on the dumbfuck. Cats are stupid, they don't get the fish. Stupid cats.

Not sure what all I had in there tin foils, dempseys, tiger things, silver dollars.. you name it I had it. I use to almost be white- my biggest problem was deciding what new fish to get or what I wanted to eat or where I wanted to go each day.

Fuck salt tanks- I'd rather get shot.

I have been awake for a long time

Eat a huge breakfast from mickey d's because, fuck it, I like mickey d's in the morning even when I GOT money then I'm relaxing enjoying a nice SLOW blowjob the fish quietly are swimming around there's money in the desk big fine automobiles outside shining like it's hot outside and then I'm asleep like a dead animal just laid out with the a/c blastin with a pack of thug killers to smoke on and some rc cola to drink on and that was it

Man those was the days back then
Sorry for rambling

You crack me up, too
for some reason

You didn't get the memo yesterday? I noticed you was worried that three letter was callin and so I figured you for (imagined that you could possibly be) holding some serious money, so then I decided to take you up on your offer to let me stay there at your place and then I remembered you only said I could ride around in the car with you but then I offered to be your new best friend since you've got a-lot of money

I may be confused about part of that since I've been awake for months
