Another lovely endorsement ...

We're not making any moral judgments here. But it is definitively a bad idea to visit pornography sites on your smartphone or tablet.

Nearly one-quarter of malware on mobile devices comes from porn websites, according to a new study from Blue Coat, a Web security and optimization company.

Mobile users don't check out porn sites often -- less than 1% of all mobile traffic is pornography. But when they do go to those sites, the risk of inadvertently downloading malware to their devices increases three-fold. That makes watching porn on smartphones a far bigger threat than viewing porn on a PC. ...
Interesting figure: "Mobile users don't check out porn sites often -- less than 1% of all mobile traffic is pornography."

Big Picture: What the affect of malware and viruses on porn sites really is on sales -- maybe that is the real enemy? This should give pause to rethink some of our preconceived notions.

Dirty F 02-11-2013 07:17 AM

What kind of malware can infect your phone? What does it do?

Cystomatic 02-11-2013 07:19 AM

We should make a campaign "Stop going to Tube Sites, you will get viruses, start going to white-listed pay sites and pay for the actual high quality thing"

I'm up to pay for that PR.

candyflip 02-11-2013 07:22 AM

When you read stats that say more than 50+% of Facebook's users use the mobile app or website, I find it hard to believe that only 1% of all mobile traffic is porn.

If this is the case, I am pleased with the results that I get. Hopefully it keeps growing.

pgmorin 02-11-2013 07:30 AM

less than 1% mobile traffic? wow i'm suprise about that. I mean there 20% of the men that admit to watch porn at work.
http://www.onlinemba.com/blog/stats-...t-pornography/ so they probaly like to use their smartphone for that

Also 25% of smartphone owners use their phones as their primary means of connecting to the internet.

The Ipsos Mobil-ology study, which tracks mobile device use in Canada, found 15 per cent of smartphone users between 18-34 indicate they access adult content on their device, though these numbers are undoubtedly understated.

I know your post formatting is bad for reading on a smartphone. :winkwink:

CNN didn't reference their source of the 1% but of our own traffic PC vs. mobile; the Mobile hits are less than 5% -- that is a fact I can see. I don't age qualify the hits in but the 18 -34 group is not the majority of buyers. There is a real big difference between a looker and a buyer. Buyers are hesitant to use credit cards on porn sites. Porn sites have a terrible reputation for malware, browser hijacks, card banging, etc. in the public eye and for good reason.

I do expect the market penetration of mobile to increase -- and the exploits too, leopards don't change their spots, it is an uphill battle ...

the whole buy and sell traffic business would collapse.....

Kelli58 02-11-2013 11:53 AM

I love when places like CNN say things like that 1% bullshit. They don't give a source, probably pulled the number out of their ass and now 1000 other sites are going to reference it as totally a legit # and use CNN as their source. LOL

Then the user will get his with 4 cross sales and wonder what happened to him.

Barry-xlovecam 02-11-2013 02:33 PM

I take back what I said; 90% of our mobile traffic is on a sub-domain so the percentage of mobile is much much higher when that is included.

But it still does not measure the total "porn traffic" on mobile.

The 1% figure is as ridiculous as that 15% being of all traffic. One thing to consider is the widespread use of mobile in 3rd world and developing nations. That traffic rarely buys internationally but is maybe 1/3 of the overall.

I don't see anyone managing ad network traffic commenting. However, that would only be the porn traffic they see but the total traffic numbers are available probably.

Then there are the comments on that CNN story:

xvideos, youporn, pornhub, youjizz, etc.. all of these are safe, and many of them have mobile apps. problem solved...

I doubt it is the pron sites themselves, it's probably the damned ADS on the websites just like any other website out there.

I've never gotten a virus DIRECTLY from a website, I have had my antivirus software block something in the ads. Which is the main reason why I have said "NO!" to all ads even on Youtube and blocked them using AdBlock Plus or Noscript. Sometimes both.

--------Mike Johnson ? 5 hours ago −

It only makes up one quarter of malware, the other three quarters comes from AntiVirus, Spyware and Malware protection. Youporn makes me feel safe, thanks to them I'm not walking around with a loaded gun in my pants.

:upsidedow
What the public thinks?

See beyond the 1% bullshit -- there is a real PR nightmare here ...

okok 02-11-2013 03:05 PM

No doubt there is malware out there but the article would have been improved to include some real world examples. Also that 1% seems pulled out of the air with no cited sources.

discounts.xxx 02-11-2013 03:29 PM

Depends What Sites

It really depends what sites you are talking about. I would say the major adult websites and tube sites wouldn't take that risk of allowing any malware to come from their websites. At the same time, they also take the time to integrate security measures in order to avoid that from happening.

The sites that malware would most likely come from are the smaller TGP's, MGP's and tubes...

In the netherlands you receive your code to log into your online bankaccount trough phone. The malware captures it and well, you can guess the rest...

thegreatestporn 02-12-2013 12:04 AM

I actually do most of my work on my phone and it seems most of the sites I visit lead me to an app download page. Can't remember the name but it sucks. Does anyone actually downloadad those redirect apps?

Supz 02-12-2013 12:14 AM

more like its bad for my eyes. because of staring at my smartphone.

Barry-xlovecam 02-12-2013 08:11 AM

That is why the tablet with a wireless or a 4G connectivity will become the majority device seen in 5 years maybe.

Casual Internet users will not need PC workstations.

But the real problem of industry practices is being glossed over -- easier to just ignore it and cry about sales declines and tubes are the enemy ...

I know it's anecdotal, but I always hear people saying they never go to porn sites because of viruses and malware. Usually it's followed by some story where they had a virus, went to Geek Squad, and they said stop going to porn sites. Of course, they view Geek Squad as some sort of authority on the topic since Geek Squad is capable of opening up a CD-ROM tray.

This is why I support huge algo updates by Google, as it at least attempts to get rid of spammers who usually also have malware, etc.

Even though it means more work for me.
