Washington considers the latest nuclear test by North Korea a threat to America?s national security and has threatened ?swift and credible action? against Pyongyang. Earlier, the US said preemptive military strike against DPRK is an option.

The US ?will also continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies,? President Barack Obama said in a statement, adding that Washington will be ?vigilant in the face of North Korean provocations and steadfast in our defense commitments to allies in the region.?

they don't need to reach the USA ... they just have to hit one of our allies. The US/NORAD knows there is no missile that any country can launch that we won't be able to detect in flight and can shot down. But we can't protect all of our allies and who knows what North Korea will do and when.

Do you mean there is some kind of weapon that is able shoot down the intercontinental ballistic missile (e.g. SS-18)? Detect - yes, but shoot down... Never heard about such systems.

Yeah, I know but... how many real ballistic missiles (not just special targets) were shot down? It's like SDI, something which a lot of money was spent to, but which was never worked for real. Or like to hit a bullet with another bullet. This is actually possible too but only in laboratory conditions, and not in real life.

we have the military power (air force) to chase and take down any missile in flight. Keeping in mind currently that fastest rocket with a warhead can be anywhere in the world within 30mins. Even if they just directed a rocket at the US or Allies we'd be fucked. Another possible World War with a country that would literally do anything to win. With Iraq they just wanted the US off mid east soil and to mind our business. North Korea wants to literally why the US off the earth. It would be really bad if we went to war with them. We'd have to control the skys and end it quick. Bomb the hell out of there plants and show force without using nukes.

Man, it is impossible to "chase" a ballistic missile with even fantastic air forces just because the turtle can't chase Formula-1 :)

I don't really think so. Why they would want to get the USA off the Earth? Also they are no that fool and they know that there are no winners in a nuclear war. I believe this is the only reason why they want to have nukes - protection against any possible internal invasion.

Actually Iraq didn't want anything. Iraq wasn't a case of a terrorist state, but a case of a Dictator we no longer needed. Saddam was our best worst friend in the middle east.

If you look back at what happened, we pretty much put the apple in front of the horse on a stick to let him attack Kuwait. Bush's admin pretty much signaled the green light and said we wouldn't get involved if he attacked Kuwait.

Saddam took that as a green light and attacked Kuwait, then we got involved. Up till that point he was our little dictator that was US friendly, because he was on our side fighting Iran by proxy. Yet even during the Iran -Iraq war we were working Iran as well.

There is a reason much of the 3rd world hates us and it's not because of our freedom.
