How to check where a server physically is?

When i look up our server i see it is in Ontario Ca., however it is here in Amsterdam unless i am being lied to;-)

I need to see where another company is hosting and i get all mixed data. Is there a (good) way?

Cheers.

Traceroute is your friend.

Naughty 02-13-2013 07:47 AM

ip-12-34-456-89.ip.secureserver.net

No location.

spiederman 02-13-2013 07:57 AM

The ip is in scotsdale (godaddy), but it points to dutch ns records. Any plausible reason for that?

1. Connect to the site
2. On the back of your computer you might see a thick telephone cable
3. Follow cable

dutch NS records don't matter. I can have name server all over the world (and I do) resolving my domain names. What matters is the IP address that your domain resolves to and where that IP is located.

Supz 02-13-2013 12:01 PM

whats the domain/ip?

Yanks_Todd 02-13-2013 12:02 PM

BTW how are you doing Naughty, its been a long time. Hope all is well.

That's based on the administrative address of the IP block, which is not necessarily the same as the physical location of the server. But it's usually about the best you can get.

FWIW, secureserver.net appears to be a vanity domain for GoDaddy and/or GoDaddy hosting. Both secureserver.net and godaddy.com share the same contact details.

Google Expert 02-14-2013 03:15 AM

Stop talking stupid things. I just did what you told and I've hurt my head since cable ended in wall only few meters from my computer! Please, don't listen to this guy.

AndrewX 02-14-2013 07:27 AM

Yes I would use a visual traceroute. But this would be incorrect info if the website is behind a CDN and you use the website IP instead of server IP.
