We got a letter from a federal agency..

We received a request for quote on one our of product lines today from a branch of the federal government.. I asked the account manager to forward me the email.

I had to post this..because it was a good thing.

*Obviously our goal is to get the best product that fits our needs for the least amount of money. After all, it?s our tax dollars being spent.*

A government agency with a sense of humor. Imagine that.

Be ready for very slow payments and absurd 'training' requirements. There is no experience quite like teaching a 'one hour class' about the proper way to open an electronic door lock, to a full office staff, when there is a keypad that has only one button on it which says 'OPEN'... and then being asked to 'stick around for the full hour.'

Been there before..we don't do a lot of government contracting but from time to there has been some things. You are right about slow pay and lots of paperwork.

To answer *what product*.. It wouldn't be appropriate to divulge that. The bidding process just started.

Keep in mind the government always buys from the lowest bidder.

We much prefer to do subcontract work for the government. Over the years we have done a lot of that for some of the largest government contractors in the country,

Yeah, we did a fair amount of that as well. Just be very careful about anything resembling any kind of indemnity clause in the contracts. I watched a good friend ruin an otherwise healthy business in a matter of months by mistakenly agreeing to indemnify the general contractor with the federal government as the end client. When things went sour, the general contractor couldn't sue upward, so they took every remedy available to recoup losses from anyone below them on the chain.

For every 'we sold them $9,000 toilets' story I have ever heard, there are 100s of 'slow payment, everyone got sued, we all lost our ass on the job' stories out there with federal work unfortunately. :Oh crap

They've got wasting money built into the system here.

You HAVE to be an approved supplier for them to buy direct from you. Had someone try and order direct from us as our stickers were inside something that had worn out. To actually get stuff to them we had to sell it to company a, who sold it to company b, who sold it to the approved supplier, who sold it to the person who was actually going to use it. :error

We are an approved supplier to a number of federal and state procurement centers. We don't get in line for government work, but this new RFQ fits us.

This is a military contract.
