NYC will begin 'rounding up mentally ill people'

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/s...FLCfDgxDqmjHIL

Quote:

The city is making a major push to sweep the streets of dangerous, mentally ill New Yorkers ? and has even compiled a most-wanted list, The Post has learned.

The measure follows a pair of high-profile subway-shove fatalities from December allegedly involving mentally ill individuals.

The city has already drawn up a list of 25 targets, sources said.

?After the Queens subway attack [of immigrant Sunando Sen], the [city] decided to take a proactive approach to track down the most dangerous mental-health patients that currently have mental-hygiene warrants? out for them, a law-enforcement source said.

Those warrants mean that the patients are not wanted for a crime but instead are being sought because they are not getting their court-ordered treatment.

There are a handful of cops assigned to the detail, which began working in the past few weeks, the source said.

Cops in the NYPD?s Real Time Crime Center are using high-tech methods to first track down the individuals, and detectives on the street have been assigned to then go after them and take them to hospitals, law-enforcement sources said.

In the past, the city Department of Health would ask cops for help finding mentally ill people who aren?t taking their court-mandated meds so they could be taken to clinics. But that only applied to those who had known addresses ? and patients who went off the grid were rarely pursued, the sources said.

The city is now concerned it could be liable if one of those people goes off the rails and hurts someone ? or themselves, the sources said.

And that?s prompted the Health Department to seek more help from the NYPD. These patients could, of course, be dangerous, health officials noted.

Had a big discussion about rounding up homeless people yesterday.
Training them, teaching them, paying them then releasing in the wild again.
Much like we might do for a wounded animal.

crockett 02-18-2013 09:01 AM

NYPost is about the same as a tabloid magazine. I wouldn't be surprised if I read that Aliens abducted the pope on their front page.

DWB 02-18-2013 09:02 AM

Curious to see how many of them get shot by police for reaching for a "gun" or whatever the police claim was threatening them.

If they are just homeless, then yes. Something like that should be done. But if they are mentally ill and homeless they need to be, and I hate saying this, under supervision and not roaming the streets where they could harm someone.

SilentKnight 02-18-2013 09:06 AM

How many politicians will get caught in the roundup net?

L-Pink 02-18-2013 09:06 AM

What are we talking here, 2.5 million people?

.

A lot of them just roam the streets anyway and there has been an epidemic of mental people pushing innocent bystanders in front of trains recently. Its happened like 3 times in the last 3 weeks or something.

SuckOnThis 02-18-2013 09:14 AM

They could hit the jackpot by coming to this site.

french tried that.. right before the royalty lost their heads

Actually, in reading the article, they aren't rounding up just any homeless, they are picking up those with a "mental hygiene warrant" - those that have failed to follow court-ordered treatment. Much like they would for parole violators.

At the same time this " Mental illness " needs to be categorized and have over view so they can not just toss anyone into that situation with the claim of mental illness.

Yea, and they pretty much hang out in the subway system all day because its warm. I take the subway almost daily and make sure to stand at the back of the platform before the train comes and im not a small guy.

I did not notice in the article it mentioned the guy who got pushed about a month back before I wrote that.

There should be something for crack heads, something like mini concentration camp - you work for the state or something and you are released if you are clean for X days. Then you have to do tests and if you are on crack again - you go to the camp again.
Unfortunately thats hardly possible with all these pussy "human rights" activist idiots.

they arent putting them in death camps. they are putting them in institutions where they can get help. Most mental patients, if they dont have someone giving them there meds, there is a good chance they stop taking them.

Wrong.
Random or innocent people should not suffer. Also camps would not be deadly or inhumane, rather regular work, something like community service etc. Not only that would be good for the state, but also for said crackheads as this would encourage them to stay clean.

You do understand that this country used to have Asylums and that's where they put the crazy people. It's only since the Asylums were shut down that the crazies were free to walk the streets.

Almost non are govt or state funded. Any that are still around are private owned. In the past they were run more like jails being they were state run.

Granted most prisons are private now as well but state still flips the bill for them.

So you want to take people that are harming only themselves and use them as slave labor for the state? How about alcoholics too? Cigarette smokers? People that eat big macs? Geezus, no wonder this country is fucked.

I buy 2 liter cokes all the time. and if you go into a 7-11 and get a 42 ounce slurpee. you deserve to be told what to do. This only effects people who dont live here and want to talk shit. No one in NYC even realizes this was passed and no one really cares.

BaldBishop 02-18-2013 03:11 PM

I'm curious what those high-tech methods are supposed to be.

Do you include people that have reading comprehension issues in that group?

Heath 02-19-2013 09:01 AM

I've come to the conclusion some people on this forum would be scooped up.
