My Dad found a 10 lbs mangetic black rock
My Dad spent his whole life in the heavy construction business. Many years ago he found a rock, about 10 lbs, black and heavy. Having seen a million rocks in his career this one stood out, so he took it and stuck it in the garage for years. Recently he was cleaning his garage out and he found the rock, and he did some digging. He thinks it's a meteorite. So I looked up line about how to tell if it is one or not and we did some tests. We hung a magnet from a string and it pulled towards the rock. Then we did the ceramic scratch test, and there was no black or red lines with the scratch test. Finally we cut a tiny piece of it open with a grinder and although we're no experts, it looked like the pictures and descriptions said online of what a meteorite should look like on the inside. The black crust even had some very tiny stress break lines in them, thinner than paper. Now here's the weird part. He feels and is starting to look younger and so is my Mom. They're pushing 80 and acting like their in their 50's now. And if that isn't weird, their old dog who has arthritis is acting more like a young dog now. He has the rock in his living room now, bragging about it to everyone. And if that isn't weird, he claims he hears voices at night now coming from the living room. Weird voices, not English. He or my mom don't speak any other languages so why don't know what this is, but they both swear they hear these weird very quiet voices late at night coming from the area of the house the rock is in. They've both said they refuse to go into the living room when they hear these noises. Regardless, he loves talking about the rock and showing it off to anyone and everyone he knows and is growing very attached to it.
I'm not sure what to tell him, he's getting a ton of joy out of owning this rock and bragging about it, but if it's worth a pile of cash should he just sell it? Please help, should he sell this 10lbs rock I think is a meteorite or keep it? It might be worth a little chunk of money if it does turn out to be a real meteorite, 10lbs ones are rare and often sell for 2-3X their weight in gold. advise? |
Since you cut it, it is now worthless.
Magnets come from earth, so do metals that attract magnets. May just be a rock. p.s. just ICQ'd you. Turn it on please. |

also I did several other tests to show it's most likely a meteorite hit me on facebook, no icq on the mac i'm on right now scott hjorleifson |
I will give a serious answer, even though this probably is some kind of troll..
Get it appraised. Then move on from there. |
Sleazy, the army should employ you to encode their messages, no one would have a clue wtf was being communicated.

but that's my point, if it's worth a pile of money, he WILL sell it. But will that end the happiness he's getting right now from owning the rock? do you want to see your Dad happy or rich? if it's a choice of one or the other. |

If the first part of the story is real, take it to the nearest natural history museum.

Do people actually read the stuff on here before they reply?

This reads like a Yahoo Answers troll question. Maybe you should try posting it there.

I just sold one of mine through Ebay (1000$ for a 2 pound meteorite but a iron one). Find a meteorite lab on Google (I found 2 in the US) that will test the chunk you took off (by the way it doesn't take any value off). It's pretty cheap, something like 50$, they will send you back your piece with a Certificate if it's a real meteorite, then you can sell it if you want.

Get it appraised.
if its worth something hold on to it until you need money or until your dad loose interest in it. if its worth nothing enjoy happiness. |

Go to your local university and ask them to verify it or where it can be done. then go from there.

Since he already cut it in half, he could sell half and keep half :thumbsup

i found a pretty big magnetic rock when i was a kid. i didn't think much of it. one day i put it up against the tv and the tv went black and white. i got in trouble for that but a few hours later the colour came back. i think i eventually threw it away.
