Govt Report: We Wasted a Ton of Money in Iraq

I was one of the millions of "traitors" who thought this was a bad idea...Boy were we dumb.

Quote:

Shortly after the March 2003 invasion, Congress set up a $2.4 billion fund to help ease the sting of war for Iraqis. It aimed to rebuild Iraq?s water and electricity systems; provide food, health care and governance for its people; and take care of those who were forced from their homes in the fighting. Fewer than six months later, President George W. Bush asked for $20 billion more to further stabilize Iraq and help turn it into an ally that could gain economic independence and reap global investments.

To date, the U.S. has spent more than $60 billion in reconstruction grants to help Iraq get back on its feet after the country that has been broken by more than two decades of war, sanctions and dictatorship. That works out to about $15 million a day.

And yet Iraq?s government is rife with corruption and infighting. Baghdad?s streets are still cowed by near-daily deadly bombings. A quarter of the country?s 31 million population lives in poverty, and few have reliable electricity and clean water.

Overall, including all military and diplomatic costs and other aid, the U.S. has spent at least $767 billion since the American-led invasion, according to the Congressional Budget Office. National Priorities Project, a U.S. research group that analyzes federal data, estimated the cost at $811 billion, noting that some funds are still being spent on ongoing projects.

That's a lot of taxpayer cake! Thank goodness it was totally wasted instead of being used to hire teachers - that'd REALLY piss people off - we're broke, after all! Oh well. It's not like we had tons of debt at the time. We could afford to blow it then I suppose.

Kinda sad about all the death and suffering I guess.
Quote:

Total American deaths since war began (3/19/03): 4488
American Wounded: 32021

But we had TONS of soldiers - and hey - they volunteered, after all.

The innocent civilians?

where did the money go?

Robbie 03-07-2013 10:27 PM

We didn't need a govt. report to tell us that (more wasteful spending lol).

The federal govt. took advantage of our shock over 9-11 and subsequent bloodthirst for "revenge" on anybody Muslim to illegally invade other countries.

I think history is gonna look at us very badly...starting with us being the only country in history to use Atomic weapons (and we didn't even use them on military targets...we mass killed two entire cities full of women and children), and going all the way to the present day where we have military bases all over the world.

I almost choked the other day when I heard the Sec. Of Defense bemoaning that we now only have one giant military ship in the Persian Gulf...WTF???
We shouldn't have ANY war ships there.

Heaven forbid if China sails a warship anywhere in the world. We sound the alarm like it's Armageddon. Meanwhile we are EVERYWHERE with soldiers, planes, ships, tanks, drones, nuclear missiles, submarines...all trying to rule the world.

Waste of money. :(

Heath 03-07-2013 11:02 PM

Money is wasted in war?!?!?! Ermahgerd! We better go back and tell every single government who has been involved throughout history wars waste some money.

On another note. I lol'd when I seen the tags for this post. Was pretty clear where the thread was going.

You posted any about the trillions wasted under this current admin? I'd read that. Since a lot of it can still be stopped. Let me guess though, its still all Bush's fault?

It's insanity.

We aren't in any kind of real "war" with any nation. We haven't really been in a big war since WW2.

But for some reason we keep being told we have to spend trillions of dollars for "defense".

Defense against what?

When we entered WW2 we weren't prepared for it. But we mobilized and within weeks we built a huge military force. There was no need to spend ridiculous amounts to be "ready".

Now in 2013 we have already spent the last 60 years building a huge military for no reason.

And if you try to cut back NEW spending on it...the Pentagon screams that we are "gutting" the military. :(

Maybe you can see why I'm a Libertarian with my thinking.

My personal feeling is that the govt. is out of control. I don't think we should be imperialistic and invading OR occupying other countries. I don't think the govt. should be in our bedrooms. I don't think the govt. should be able to tell us what we can and can't see, think, or hear. I don't think the govt should be able to tell us what we ingest in our own bodies.

I think the govt. should be just big enough (local and federal) to provide necessary services to it's citizens, police should only be used for REAL crimes (stealing, murder, rape, breaking and entering, assault, etc.), the military should be TINY in times of peace.

I am so disgusted with our sexually repressed society and our overbearing govt. that I am seriously longing to leave the country and live in the Bahamas.

Interesting thought.

I actually am quite surprised that he's painting. I figured he'd spend all his time playing video games or something.

I have to disagree, in looking at the events of the war up to the dropping of the bombs, the alternative would have been much worse. for instance, the battles leading up to this, iwo jima and okinawa, we had to kill every single japanese, they did not and would not surrender. + we had already carpet bombed every city in the entire country except a few left for the atomic bombs. and these were incendiary bombs dropped on cities made of wood and paper- every city, yet no surrender. we had run out of targets, the japanese had lost the war a long time ago, yet they refused to surrender.
Moreover, combined with a imperial order for all civilian japanese to kill one person as they die during an invasion. 10s of millions of people brainwashed to choose suicide + 1 kill over surrender.

actually, with the lend-lease program operating at 100%, our manufacturing capability was fully operational by the time we entered the war. even so, it took us ~4 more years to ramp up production to full wartime manufacturing.

My guess is Bush is experiencing some type of epiphany about how he was puppeteered by Cheney and Rumsfeld. His paintings (which were discovered when his email account was hacked) is him desperately wanting to cleanse himself of his role in the death and misery he spread both here and abroad.

VERY interesting theory. Hmmmmm.

The money wasn't 'Wasted', it was actually paid by the government to their buddies and to companies they have stock in. This is the whole idea of 'Foreign Aid' it's an excuse to rob the tax money, paying it to yourself and your friends. :2 cents:

Don't fool yourself...the lions share of that money went to House and Senate members who have defense contractors and/or military bases in their states.

Don't forget...George Bush didn't invade Iraq until Congress voted and said "yes". Both Democrats and Republicans filled their filthy pockets.

And unlike Bush and his cabinet...the Congress men and women who voted us into that war (and then voted every year to keep us in it and financed it) are all STILL there in Washington D.C.

They should ALL be voted out of office. And every election it should be rinse and repeat...vote out ALL incumbents.

Rochard 03-09-2013 06:54 PM

We sure did spend a ton of money in Iraq. We have this concept of "nation building" and trying to make the world a better place, and this rarely works. It worked at the close of WWII with the Marshal Plan and Europe, but... The Middle Eastern / Muslin culture isn't ready for us yet. I look at my next door neighbor and I see a man; They look at their next door neighbor and see someone who does't believe in the same religion. What a shame.

You couldn't be more wrong.

The US military wasn't "fully prepared" for war in December of 1941, the truth is the United States was claiming "neutrality" it was in fact gearing up for war. Before general war broke out in Europe, President Roosevelt proclaimed a "limited national emergency" and authorized large increases in military forces as well as increased spending in equipment and investments into more technology, specifically aircraft. During 1940 and 1941 the US Army conducted some of the largest training maneuvers in world history.

By April 1941 both the US Army and US Navy was well prepared. By this point the US Navy was most likely the leader in Aircraft Carrier technology, and the US Marines had spend the past decade perfecting close air support and amphibious landings.

When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, the nation was stunned and American men signed up in large numbers, but our military was ready before then.

Perhaps maybe you give some thought to what would have happened if the US did not spend the last sixty years building a huge military for "no reason". The landscape would be vastly different if we didn't; The only thing preventing the Soviet Union from taking control of all of Europe during the 1950s and 1960s was the fact that the US had such a large military force - and the same with China in the Pacific.

I know what you're saying.

But to me the "symbol" of the war is the Federal Govt.

Dick Cheney definitely took advantage of a situation (9-11) that was laid at his feet like a gift and brainstormed a lot of it in my opinion.

But once he took his plans to the "Greediest Place On Earth" (U.S. Congress) that's when the real money started to flow.

And the worst part is...the very Senators and Congressmen who made so much money for their cronies via the "war"...are the exact same ones STILL sitting in power and criticizing the whole thing as if their hands are clean. lol

Robbie 03-10-2013 02:30 PM

I would think that a lot of the "cost" of the "war" is just the Pentagon asking for MORE shit afterwards.

What I mean is...we ALREADY had paid for those trillions of dollars of missiles and ships and planes that weren't being used since the last Gulf War (and before that Vietnam). Hell, it's almost a waste NOT to ever use them.
Sad but true.

Sunny Day 03-10-2013 02:37 PM

Just now waking up? Atlantic magazine reported this years ago. Largest cash transfer ever. 9 BILLION dollars in $100s shipped to Iraq then lost to anyone who walked in the door for any reason.

Why would he have to borrow money when we had already been spending about half of everything we have in this country on the "Defense" budget for the last 50 years?

Where did all THAT money go? :(

Just take it from the end of the last war of any size...The Vietnam War.
Every year since the end of that "war"...the U.S. spent from $300 to $500 BILLION every year!!!

That's 40 years and TWENTY TRILLION DOLLARS!!!!! So we didn't already have an entire fleet of expensive ships, planes, submarines...a million tons of ammunition, guns, tanks, jeeps, hummers???

IF we didn't already have all that shit...then I'd say we have a bigger scandal: Where did FORTY YEARS of high military spending go???

experiments, technology, paying everyone that works in defense, fuel, training. buildings and bases all over the world. when it comes down to it i bet equipment is just a small piece of the budget.

well, military spending you know.....and yes, and wiki actually shows the true cost of iraq 2 costs more than stated in that reuter's article

Quote:

The costs of the 2003-2010 Iraq War are often contested, as academics and critics have unearthed many hidden costs not represented in official estimates. The most recent major report on these costs come from Brown University in the form of the Costs of War project,[1] which said the total for wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan is at least $3.2-4 trillion.
also, this is INCREMENTAL costs. that is costs above and beyond annualized costs of running the military and such. just the extra to run operations.
