Those people are bat shit crazy. You never know what dad instructed his son to do in his passing. All that saber rattling in the past that got ignored very well may come back and bite some people in the ass, starting with South Korea.

The guy has only been the supreme leader of NK for a year and three months. NO ONE knows if this kid has balls or not yet. I wouldn't foolishly rush to write him off as a clone of his father just yet, because he is not his father. He may be all talk or he may just push the button. Too early to tell.

The source of the N Korean Governments power is the idea that they are still at war with the USA and South Korea. It's not about the rest of the world as much as its about controlling their own masses while attempting nuclear blackmail at the same time. Win/Win for them. They have nothing to lose and only more economic aid, oil and medicine to gain.

The trouble is that they live in such international isolation that all they hear is their own echos bouncing back at them - and it's hard for us to imagine living in a totalitarian, Orwellian state that's been in state of war with us for sixty years. Their leaders really have kept them on a wartime footing that whole time - and a huge percentage of the GNP has gone into digging underground forts, cities, and transportation and militarizing the nation - for obvious reasons. They know that the only remaining superpower hates their guts and maintains large numbers of theatre-range, nuclear-tipped, missiles aimed at every facility they own and is constantly probing their defenses. From their perspective, it is a sane decision, intended to avoid US aggression, to have nuclear weapons and missiles capable of delivery; from North Korea, it looks like an insane decision to ever retreat from their nuclear program. They believe, as we did with the Russians during the Cold War, that nuclear capability and underground survivability may be the only things that can keep the peace. We have at least 28,000 troops on a state of nearly constant alert in South Korea and our own nuclear weapons aimed at them. It's just not a stable situation and ultimately, someday, something is going to give. It is scary.

Thats all fine and well except the Soviet Union wasn't dependent on the people they threatened for hard currency, food, oil and medicine. But you're 100% right in that they were living in their own deluded reality and its something most just couldn't understand unless they lived there or experienced it first hand.

However North Korea ends, it's gonna be messy. Must be very scary to live there, especially out in the remote areas.

Rational people can't imagine genocide. Rational people don't fly planes into buildings or strap bombs to their bodies and walk into a restaurant. The lack of regard for human life that many around the world constantly demonstrate is cause for concern.

His father and him were/are delusional paranoids and have a country held hostage in ignorance. The US doesn't 'hate their guts' - the Iron Curtain fell, and with it so did the Cold War. They are choosing to live in a world that no longer exists. Vietnam is now a Communist country and the US doesn't care. And it doesn't care much if North Korea continues to be. Nobody's going to attempt to overrun them, not the US or South Korea.

The US should normalize relations with Cuba and North Korea - they will with Cuba once the Castro brothers are gone. They can't normalize with NK because you can't reason with an irrational person. NK is like those isolated Japanese soldiers they found decades later on Southern Pacific islands who still thought WWII was still going on.

Like I said before, if they're stupid enough to launch missiles at S.Korea, Japan, or even the USA. Its game over for them.

I think that China will make the first move agains NK.I can't imagine that they allow more Western influence at their borders.

If not for oil the US wouldn't care about any of these countries, there wouldn't have been Desert Storm or the Iraq War. The US does give aid to those in need, which is noble, as do all first world countries. Per capita the US doesn't give the most, in total dollars they do.

And there is little that the United States would prefer more than to see North Korea vanish from the face of the earth. They know that - and they feel the same way about us.

I recommend that you more closely read about the era that I lived through. US grain sales to the Soviet Union averted famine in Russia more than once - and was not paid for in anything like gold or hard currency - or even soft currency. It was paid for in "credits".

The US can't use nuclear weapons first for many reasons starting with how it will play in the rest of the world, how history would brand us as Darth Vader, and a showdown with congress about the always sticky interface between the president's role as commander in chief versus the congress's exclusive right to declare war. It won't happen. The Koreans might do just about anything, so unpredictable are they. They still think of their seizure of the USS Pueblo and its crew as one of their smartest moves and this ship - still a commissioned vessel of the US Navy - is docked as a museum ship in North Korea to this day. The US was brought to its knees, important intelligence information was seized before it could be destroyed, code machines were taken, at least one American was killed, and the crew was not released until it and the US admitted wrongdoing - an apology that the US immediately repudiated after the crew was repatriated, on the basis of duress in securing our apology. The ground war in Korea last time was simply brutal with enormous US loss of life and the encirclement of our troops at the Pusan Resevoir. These are some the most fiercely savage, deeply committed soldiers on the face of the planet, trained to believe that killing Americans and South Koreans is a high virtue, if not the highest. They have sacrificed a normal way of life for artillery, missiles, tanks, and underground fortification, which they all to be necessary for inevitable war with us. Some of them long for the day. It would not be a surprise to have 50% casualties among our 28,000 troops - the numbers were close to that the last time that we as "superpower" went to war with them, at least in some operations. And in the end, that's why we've had only a truce since then, not a victory and not a surrender, and not the end of the state of war. It was beyond our ability to obtain an outright victory in the fifties - and it might be outside our ability to obtain one now. You cannot win any war with missiles and airpower. It is not until you can occupy on the ground and control the territory that you win a war. That will be a tough nut to crack if hostilities resume in Korea. Would you volunteer to keep Seol safe for democracy? Would you send your children to fight against a nation of crazies armed to the teeth?

as far as i understand there was a truce between NK and the UN, not the US specifically

and i think everyone would appreciate if NKs current government would vanish, not whole NK. Or have those poor brainwashed civilians done anything personal to you?

i am pretty sure that a majority of the NK people would love to reunite with SK - and if its only for economical reasons
