How To Catch A Thief?

Last night someone drove to the back of my buildings car port and stole over $6000 worth of camera equipment. I have a feeling it's the same person who has been breaking into cars over the past several months on my street. I believe the person comes back nightly and looks for shit in cars.

To start off I live in a really nice area in Los Angeles. Tonight I did a stakeout around the time my shit was stolen. I saw a suspicious older model car that tried to pull down my alley at 3am around the same time my shit was stolen last night. When the people in the car saw my in the car they got scared and turned around and parked across the street. There was two people in the car and they sat in the car for over 30 mins, one guy got out and started looking into cars and tried to open the doors. He got to a truck and opened the door. It was obvious he was looking into cars so I called the cops and said theirs a guy breaking into cars by my house. 1 hour later after calling 911 they show up but not for me some guy was talking on his cellphone and possible DUI so they needed 7 cop cars for that and I tried to flag one down but none pulled over. 20 mins after that only 1 stopped and didn't do shit and refused to take a report even when I said i got the plate, i saw the person trying to open up car doors. He said I couldn't make a police report because It wasn't my car the person was breaking into. Even though I witnessed a crime I was not allowed to make a report!

WTF do I do I'm so frustrated if I lived in anywhere else the cops would have done something or even try to look for the guy. One of the cops was being rude to me and treated me like a criminal and I got pissed. Anyway they left and whoever that fucking guy was possibly the same guy who stole my shit gets to go free

Follow him home or even better put a gps tracker on his car when he is looking at other cars.

Break into his car when he is breaking into someone else's car

Markul 03-24-2013 05:21 AM

Woa that is frustrating man. Does your insurance cover it? No matter how hard it is, try not to go the vigilante road. That shit will probably just backfire.

dave90210 03-24-2013 05:38 AM

The insurance doesn't cover it. I thought it did but when I called they told me it wasn't covered

Who would be in the market to buy your equipment? Where I live you have to be proactive about finding your own stolen stuff. Cops will tell ppl after their places get robbed of pawn-able items, etc., to plaster local pawn and resale shops w/ pics and contact info. And if it's industry specific stuff, descriptions of equipment and contact ppl in the industry who would possibly buy the equipment w/ same. So that if they don't have a fence, or even if they have a fence who would have to resell to an end user, that you might be able to locate your equipment. Also scour Craiglist, etc.

You need to head over to Firearms Commerce and get some gear!

you = no income

DUI = income

End of story.

you had $6000 of camera in your car parked in a carport in los angeles overnight when cars in your area have been getting broken into for months?

96ukssob 03-24-2013 06:42 AM

Criminals will return to the scene again. I would seek out a lot of boxes of high priced items and leave them outside the building as they are trash. Then just sit inside and wait.

Once he comes back hold him at gun point and demand him to pay you thousands if dollars and give you back your stuff. Drive him to the woods afterwards and handcuff him to a tree

DWB 03-24-2013 07:28 AM

By the smallest GPS tracker you can get your hands on and bait him, leaving something easy for him to steal. Hide it in something where he won't find it, like inside the guts of something electronic. Then see where it goes. Hopefully you can get the police to react. If not, burn the place to the ground, hire some guys to beat him senseless, or just consider it all a loss and move on.

exactly. Sorry you lost your stuff but it's crazy to leave anything in your car. I live in a good part of Los Angeles too, but I never leave anything of value in my car if it's in the driveway. Now add that their have been car break-ins in your area, well, sometimes you have to be smarter than the thief.

Supz 03-24-2013 08:26 AM

Call your car insurance company

Barry-xlovecam 03-24-2013 08:52 AM

You need a commercial policy with a contents in the locked vehicle rider to have any coverage for that loss.

$6,000 of camera equipment is for commercial use.

I would suggest you buy a gun safe for your apt/condo and store the camera equipment there -- your homeowner's policy won't cover commercial equipment either ...

Buy a commercial policy or limit the risk of loss as best that you can.

This would also apply to computer equipment of more that household value, any equipment (that can be proven) used in a home business ...

DBS.US 03-24-2013 09:39 AM

Get a few of these http://www.harborfreight.com/wireles...tem-93068.html
Put them around some thief bait.

L-Pink 03-24-2013 09:45 AM

Move to Texas where you are allowed to shoot people for fucking with your property.

.

Meloman 03-24-2013 11:16 AM

Actually go into your local police station and try to file a report there. They should be obligated to do it there.

But even with the police report they probably wont' do anything.

Mike Honcho 03-24-2013 11:27 AM

Cops will not sympathize with you for leaving valuables in your car that are stolen. I had a brick thrown through my car window, with a hand written note, that said 'fuck you'. Blatantly my Ex-G/F who did it, but the Cop told me "If you didn't see her do it, I can't do anything about it.". I asked him if the note could be taken in as evidence and maybe she could be questioned, he responded with "What do you think this is CSI?"

Captain Kawaii 03-24-2013 11:45 AM

Sane approach.
We live on west side where cops are notorious for bogus tickets and not doing shit. Set up real surveillance gear and videotape the area. Catch them on film. If you do and cops do nothing? Hire a publicist and shame the shit out of them. They'll do something then. A neighbor set up a camera and posted signs, area under surveillance and you are on camera..

Bottom line, if you want cops to do anything you will have to lie. "I confronted them, they drew weapons, I ran, lucky to be alive. This is the license plate.

Insane approach
Hire gang members of another ethnicity to tune up/torture the criminals. MS13 loves this shit.

onwebcam 03-24-2013 01:37 PM

Very likely the tags and/or car was stolen.

brassmonkey 03-24-2013 02:07 PM

put a cam on your car maybe a few. leave something on the dash a dead cell phone would do. get one from the pawn shop and record the nights activities. just like trapping animals. :2 cents: :thumbsup and please take out your distributor cap so the asshole doesnt go joy riding in your shit :1orglaugh

MrMaxwell 03-24-2013 02:13 PM

Your stakeout wasn't very good if they saw you, genius. One time I had a lawn tractor on a trailer and some retard stole it. The next night they actually came back because I left a weedeater and some other shit in the bed of my truck. I was waiting in bushes. When it turned out to be five guys I turned white like a ghost but when I cocked my gun they all walked off. I was scared to death and I think they were confused as hell. None of us said shit to each other. They never came back and I ended up getting my shit back and the guy who stole it did a year. LoL. They made it some kind of vehicular crime or some shit to put his ass down for a year. Ha ha ha. I hope someone raped him in jail or prison. In the ass and the face. LoL.

One or two to the knees or ankles will slow down the perp long enough for law enforcement to arrive and not be lethal.

Those little .22 hollow points are going to hurt like a motherfucker though!

Did you actually leave expensive camera equipment unattended in your friggin' car? I lock my tens of thousands of dollars worth of video, camera, audio and lighting equipment in a heavy ass safe, along with hard drives, checkbooks, firearms and other valuables. The safe only cost me $1800- less than the price of one DSLR camera body. It's the best insurance one can purchase and prevents the loss in the first place rather than (maybe) compensating you after the fact. Way too many photographers are super lax about security.

I can't understand if they stole it from his building or out of his automobile.. he mentions a carport.. If you really have what you just talked about, why would you openly be telling everyone about it? That is a bad idea, Mr. Gunn. . .

It's hardly a secret that I'm a well-established veteran porn producer presumably owning a lot of equipment. I hardly think it's a bad idea to mention that I have heavy duty physical security on my valuables resistant to all but the the heaviest duty assault and that others should do the same. I didn't even mention my wireless alarm system with multiple glass break, door contacts, smoke and motion detectors or the indoor/outdoor color internet enabled security cameras uploading footage 24/7 either. I got burglarized once about fifteen years ago. Learned my lesson and it ain't never gonna happen again with all the precautions I have taken. Seems like most others are pretty lax and just leave their stuff unprotected and hope for the best. That's all I'm trying to say.

IF THIS WERE A MOVIE, here's the script I'd write

Burn his car while he's trying to break into cars with a note and expired bus pass.

Melt styrofoam in gasoline to make a napalm constancy then think: car interior.

Mix up a bucket of thermite, put it on his hood, and light it with a torch. Walk away calmly.

Take your pick.

the end.

What do you plan on doing with that pea shooter? Mark II wouldn't put someone out of commission long enough to do anything. Get yourself a .380 or 9mm instead.
