Scientists find treatment to kill every kind of cancer tumor

Researchers might have found the Holy Grail in the war against cancer, a miracle drug that has killed every kind of cancer tumor it has come in contact with, the New York Post reported.
The drug works by blocking a protein called CD47 that is essentially a "do not eat" signal to the body's immune system, according to Science Magazine.
This protein is produced in healthy blood cells, but researchers at Stanford University found that cancer cells produced an inordinate amount of the protein thus tricking the immune system into not destroying the harmful cells.
With this observation in mind, the researchers built an antibody that blocked cancer's CD47 so that the body's immune system attacked the dangerous cells.
So far, researchers have used the antibody in mice with human breast, ovary, colon, bladder, brain, liver and prostate tumors transplanted into them. In each of the cases the antibody forced the mice's immune system to kill the cancer cells.

They were working on a "kill any cancer Vaccine" in Israel, too.
What happened to that one? Still in the works?

Edit, googled it:
"In a breakthrough development, the Israeli company Vaxil BioTherapeutics has formulated a therapeutic cancer vaccine, now in clinical trials at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem. If all goes well, the vaccine could be available about six years down the road, to administer on a regular basis not only to help treat cancer but in order to keep the disease from recurring.

The vaccine is being tested against a type of blood cancer called multiple myeloma. If the substance works as hoped — and it looks like all arrows are pointing that way — its platform technology VaxHit could be applied to 90 percent of all known cancers, including prostate and breast cancer, solid and non-solid tumors."

So now we'll live forever?

DWB 04-05-2013 05:10 AM

Man, I really hope something like this comes to the market soon. Cancer kills too many people.

Hopefully it is affordable for everyone.

they'd be losing $ if they didn't mass produce it right? Not exactly a rare disease.

Cuba have some kind of lung cancer vaccine that transform cancer in chronic lung 'problem' but without death

Farang 04-05-2013 05:59 AM

That is great news.

Jel 04-05-2013 06:03 AM

wait, so the 'they wont allow cancer cures' brigade were wrong?

borked 04-05-2013 06:23 AM

Why is this being reported in the media now? This was work published over a year ago...

there will be a "limited supply" which will be exclusively for presidents, congressmen and bankers...driving the price too high for the average citizen.

unfortunately greed always wins.

bronco67 04-05-2013 06:44 AM

So the NYPost is taking news that's a year old (there's no cure for cancer)and act like they're breaking some great new discovery? and then FOX News reports it secondhand. They should get the Pulitzer for this one.

Choopa_Pardo 04-05-2013 06:45 AM

FUCK CANCER.

This would be a an incredible breakthrough.

SuckOnThis 04-05-2013 08:23 AM

Apparently they will start testing on humans in late 2013 or early 2014.

I sure hope cancer will be cured for good.

pimpmaster9000 04-05-2013 08:47 AM

shit i hope they make the cure and that this is not just a BS story...

96ukssob 04-05-2013 08:53 AM

This would be amazing, but so many scum bag lobbyists for chemo type drugs would have this held up in FDA approval for years. All this out of pure greed that could save millions of innocent people.

I would love to see these cancer treatment centers have a big "for lease" sign out front in two years because they are no longer needed.

They just need to get on the next problem. There should always be money available to those who actually fight for the human race.

"Greed" is why they are researching it to begin with.

Yes, as someone who worked for a major Pharmaceutical/Chemical company for a few years, I can say they are very much in it for the money. There is a culture about getting it done, they brag to all employees when they get a new treatment made. It would be next to impossible to hide any real achievements. Let us not forget that a lot of research is done in School Laboratories, with people trying to get their name into the history books. To be remembered in History. There is no buying off people like this.

I fully expect this sort of research to yield results as i worked in a lab doing the exact kind of work they used to find the anti. The problem is it is very much hit and miss. Literally like picking any spot on a darkened map, and then trying to explore it. Add to that that only a very small portion of the map will remain constant, the other parts keep changing as it mutates and evolves.
I have posted about this before, i sometimes look for the guy who i used to work for online, see what he publishes.

ok I had to stop there.. The New York post is nothing more than a political gossip rag.. When we start seeing people treated by this or it gets a publication by some major medical journal then I'd believe it.

It is real. This sort of research will be paying off in spades over the next couple decades.

Too many other things to study. Imagine if we could unleash 10000 sub geniuses on other problems we currently face in the Biological Sciences.

Uhm... you mean like all the other treatments that have basically made most cancers treatable and not life threatening and dramatically increased survival rates over the last 20 years? Or....

Well, look at what happened with the HIV meds in Africa and the pharma companies. That was a cluster fuck. Logic says they would have made it affordable for everyone on earth, but they didn't. So it got copied and then the companies who copied it got sued and it turned into a huge mess.

These companies go out of their way to protect their property and there is no telling if this will be affordable or not should it ever hit the market.

there have been advances in cancer treatment but nothing major, early detection has helped. the major killers - pancreatic, colon, lung, brain - very little progress. breast cancer is still a major killer even with all the early screening.

yeah - i remember when Interferon was the magic bullet hope, front cover of Time magazine, then the same with monoclonal antibodies - they never fullfilled their promise.

maybe this is a major leap - love seeing Stanford involved in it rather than some little known institute. Stanford is filled with the world's top minds in many disciplines.

Penny24Seven 04-05-2013 03:20 PM

so if you are dieing of cancer now this really just pisses you off more right? 6 years from now lol, yeah you are dead by then but you can die knowing there is a cure or maybe. You will never know.

Nothing major? Almost every form of cancer is treatable. 20 years ago, any form of cancer was a death sentence.

Many people feel this way but I don't understand why.
If you put out a medicine that killed cancer and charged $25,000 to each patient who wants it, you would be a TRILLIONAIRE.

About 1,500 people die of cancer every day, and each of them would take out a second mortgage for a drug to save their life.

The average cost to treat cancer now is close to $300,000.

There is a reason there has not been one single cure for any disease EVER.

And obviously, the reason has nothing to do with how the human body and diseases work, but instead, mass conspiracy.

Could be, or it could be it is much more profitable to treat diseases rather than cure them. I don't think anyone can say with certainty as to why.

Define Cured.
Smallpox
Polio
Diptheria
Chicken Pox
Rubella

etc etc....vaccine is the same result as a cure is it not?

Or are you meaning, after someone is sick and already fighting the disease then we can step in and cure them?
