will the internet seize to exist in 10 years as we know it?

Some really old smelly guys I know think so.

The reason being... I don't know.

I can only assume it has to do with the inability to control digital theft which will mandate a control.

That control likely coming from government who will then tax everything online and pick who to shut down.

Just a thursday night thought ;)

2013 04-04-2013 10:54 PM

I don't think it will go away, but I could see a day where it was very heavily regulated.

Nature won't allow that. Information wants to be free and spread.

This doesn't mean you should monetize off of free by ripping other people off.

The Internet genie is going to be a hard one to put back in the bottle.

What is more likely is the proliferation of walled gardens like Facebook, where most people go and rarely leave to go to elsewhere.

To a point Facebook already is one.

The number of people I see socially who have Facebook and Twitter apps on their phone and readily admit that's the extent of their Internet use.

Even on TV it's becoming that way, people often have ABC iView, Netflix for viewing video content, Facebook on their TV, when they do leave Facebook it's often to go to a news site, which in this country are rapidly rolling out Apps and becoming subscription based.

Most of us live outside of the world of the average consumer, we create content therefore fool ourselves into believing that all the sites we visit is the norm, however I am sure there is a growing segment of our population for which Facebook and the odd cloud based service is their entire scope of the Internet.

This will completely depend on how join page submission ratios play out over the coming years.

Powerful families don't like their secrets being discussed freely, these people don't tend to sit back and do nothing

I wonder why he hates the Internet and wishes it was never invented?

96ukssob 04-05-2013 08:25 AM

The Internet has been on its way out for a while. Once my contract with Verizon is up this year for home service, I'm going to cut the Internet off. Nothing new, same boring reruns

I think this has already happened. We go to less sites. We buy at less sites. The web is getting smaller and tighter.

Actually, a very good point...and probably quite true in many cases.

People tend to congregate in places they become familiar with...developing a 'comfort zone' - much like visiting the same pub over and over as you get to know the other regular patrons, bartender, etc....even if there's a half dozen bars on the same street.

While I don't doubt that there are people who only use Facebook and little or nothing else, there are a lot of people who perceive themselves as only using Facebook, but in fact do a whole lot more on other sites than they realize.

A perfect example of this is my brother's wife. She claims all she ever needs internet access for is Facebook, which she is on multiple times per day. However, when I sat down at her computer and checked the history it turns out she visits a lot of sites fairly regularly, but for some reason doesn't count them. She visits yahoo to play games, she has horses and visits several horse supply and info sites, she also looks up stuff about TV shows she watches and gets online to check kids sports schedules. When I point this out to her she just shrugged it off and actually said, "Those are really the internet though." Apparently they just exist in her computer and nowhere else.

I disagree. What is happening is what has always happened with all types of media: it changes and adapts.

I would argue that Facebook and Twitter are simply the stepchildren of the online forum platform. And don't forget that Facebook and Twitter interact with the web at large to bring IN content and more importantly, to promote it. Thinking they're some kind of isolated islands is simply missing the bigger picture.

EddyTheDog 04-05-2013 07:07 PM

It will exist but I doubt I will be sitting in front of a PC using it though - It will be in everything from your TV for content to your washing machine for convenience.

Its an exciting time to be alive.

scottybuzz 04-06-2013 07:03 AM

look at the biggest sites on the web
pinterest
facebook
youtube

they all make alot of their money through stolen content....

if people try to change the law these sites will moan like crazy. It will not happen.

rayadp05 04-06-2013 07:19 AM

Only 10 years? I was wondering the other day, if it would exist in 30 years from now. But yeah, I do expect some big changes to manifest themselves over the coming years, but with whatever changes that do come, it's really only a matter of adapting with those changes in order to continue delivering the product (and/or service's) that you offer to surfers and potential customers. The internet is a GREAT platform to reach people, but I'll be a pornographer, whether the internet exists or not.

crockett 04-06-2013 07:29 AM

I don't think the internet it's self will change but rather the way most people connect to it and what they use it for.

More & more people no longer use actual computers but cell phones & tablets instead. This is much bigger with the younger generation and as they grow older I'm sure the web will adapt to their style of usage.

Not to mention kids these days seem a lot less interested in traditional websites but rather texting and just social networking.. It's pretty telling how bad it's gotten when you see people whom are in the same room and rather than talk to each other they are busy texting some random whom ever..

Ringo 04-06-2013 07:35 AM

I'm not talking about the wrong words, but I do not understand the question

If North Korea sets of an atmospheric EMP with their Super-EMP weapon that the governments are worried about, the internet will be over the moment it explodes. Could be an hour from now, or tomorrow, next week, or never. Enjoy it while you have it.

No need for EMP, a simple Seize/Decease order is 'nuff.

That was actually a pretty good movie. I randomly bought it several years back in a DVD bargain bin just because I figured that having both Bruce Willis & Brad Pitt in it, it had to be somewhat decent.

pimpmaster9000 04-06-2013 12:28 PM
