Paypal for Porn.

Hi all

i have a question about payment systems for adult material. i have see some site use paypal but i though that was against the paypal rules. is it allowed or are they slipping under the radar?

also whats the best system to use for a subscription service, i have looked at ccbill but i don't necessarily want them to handle my subscriptions and memberships i just want them to handle the transaction. is this possible or is there better ones to use.

Thanks

Dan

PayPal for adult is risky. I believe they technically allow B2B transactions, but if they find you billing for customers you're likely to have your account closed. Using something like Paxum is a much safer bet.

yea i was looking at paxum, do you know if there is a ipn system like paypal has?

Technically, Paypal should not be used to sell or buy porn. However, it is hard to make a clear definition of what is porn or what is not porn. They could be paying through Paypal to buy blog posts, site descriptions, site reviews or SEO work.

I have used paypal on adult sites before you can get away with it for awhile but once they catch on, they ban that account for life

Hope this helps, This is a direct repsonse from the Paypal Risk team yesterday.

"Yes, it is permissible for US sellers to sell adult toys and novelties. The prohibited category is primarily the sale of adult digital goods, e.g. memberships to adult sites, digital photos or video, streaming adult movies, cam shows, etc.

If you have any further questions, please contact the PayPal Brand Risk Management Department at [email protected].

I called them after this email to confirm the thinking, and it boils down to , if you can ship it as in a actually tangible product you can sell it.. if it is anything digital then no.

^^always good to get confirmation, and yeah, they're ok with tangible adult goods, which is why peeps who sell adult videos as shippable DVDs on ebay can use paypal. Send the same video as a download and it's not ok.

I'd urge caution in contacting paypal about adult-related issues through one's own paypal account though. I've heard of a few cases where paypal froze accounts NOT used for adult-purposes simply because they identified the owner of the account as being involved in the adult field. Best to contact paypal anonymously to avoid hassle.

Good to know

Thanks for your responses. I thought that was the case, my client wants to use PayPal for the time being so ill have to make him aware of the risks.

Thanks:thumbsup

I have a question regarding this matter as well.
We're setting up a system that sells individual video clips.
In order to do this, someone needs to add funds to their account and we want to accept paypal as a payment processor as well.
Basically they would be buying credit, not pornography.

My first question: would that be okay?

And if not, my second solution would be to start a different website which sole purpose is to sell online credits (lets call it porncoins). Those coins can be used on any adult site that accepts this and can be used to buy anything, not just clips online content, but also clothing and that sort of stuff. This way it is not linked to the pornsite site directly. But they can log in with their user account and they can buy their credits there and use them on the clips site.

How would paypal feel about that? Because you're just selling credit, nothing else.

Paypal is risky in adult, if it's allowed, sales will sky rocket for sure.

You cannot buy or sell "virtual currencies" on PayPal.
You cannot fund a wallet for that or another website.
You can use Paypal for porn with Epoch.com processing. Contact Epoch and see if they can process for your site's "credits" as a bulk package purchase that go into the Account of your Customers to spend part of the balance for the "goods" you offer.

My understanding is that Epoch is aggregating adult virtual transactions and processing them as a third-party processor with PayPal.

Paypal is ok for buying adult advertising though. You can use it with Juicyads and other ad networks.
